  • What do YOU want in an OS?

Ok, here is my opinion.  Feel free to disagree or agree with me on anything :)  With the recent flub of Microsoft's flagship software, Windows' new version of Vista, and the constant growth of alternative computer operating systems such as SuSE, debian, Ubuntu Linux, I believe it comes down to US as users of software to tell the ...

  • Re: USB Flash as main boot drive...

Well, fundings kinda stalled on this for the moment.  I do have the slim slot-loading DVD-ROM drive, though (I bought two since it was an amazing price).I figured if I mention Linux, this thread'll draw people in. ;)But, truthfully, I've been thinking about running Damn Small Linux (DSL) on this machine, with a FluxBox interface, and probably just ...

  • What's Your Favorite Linux Built-in shell Command?

Besides backtick (`), my all-time favorite is ''find'' in the form of $ find -name <pattern> -execdir <application or another_shell_command> \;For example:1.  Using ffmpeg to convert all avi files in my `pictures' directory and all subdirectories under it to h264 Quicktime format, mov or mp4$ cd ~/pictures    ...

  • Re: If you haven't heard yet...[yay]

I know you've received some questions about Linux support already, but here are the questions I would like to hear about: Q: As different Linux distributions are more widely used and Open Source software is more widely accepted, what is the long-term vision for support for that community? Q: In the short term, does nVidia have plans to add ...

  • Re: If you haven't heard yet...[yay]

I don't know how much of this is true or speculation from what I have learned so bare with me... and feel free to correct/reword anything on these subjects, but these are the biggest things i've been wondering about for a while... 2 part Q: It has come to my attention that Nvidia has made most of the card ''manufacturers'' little more than ...

  • Re: Best Operating System?

MewMint:I can't believe in a tech forum there's so little love for 2000. It has just about every feature that XP has, and it does it on less resources. Its kind of like Xp's efficient cousin. Actually Win2000 is XP's mother.  And you are correct, her son is big but strong and very much like her.  Her grandchild is horridly obese and it ...

  • Under $50 video card ideas

Okay, so I'm planning a budget build, still not decided on Intel vs AMD. I was considering integrated graphics, but the more I read, the less I like that idea. Mostly using my computer for web surfing, home office, some video, not into heavy gaming or anything like that. I am leaning towards the nividia 8400GS or something similar. I would also ...

  • Compatiblity Shuttle SG31G2/Intel E8400 CPU

Am putting together a PC to run on Linux.  I just found the Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 will plug into 775 socket. Are there any gotchas, since this CPU seems to be cheaper and faster than the older E6600 Core 2 Duo?   Thanks,   Bob

  • The Rise of Linux

Excerpt from the GNU Manifesto: '' I consider that the golden rule requires that if I like a program I must share it with other people who like it. Software sellers want to divide the users and conquer them, making each user agree not to share with others. I refuse to break solidarity with other users in this way. I cannot in good ...

  • Re: How to make a computer lockdown?

Thinking laterally, If all you want to allow is websurfing and some basic functions, consider operating linux. Many distributions of linux are free and come in a CD-ROM bootable format so that you don't have to install anything on your system. Just lock down all your normal accounts with a password and hand the CD-ROM to your guest user. When they ...

  • DMRaid configuration

suppose I wanted to dual boot XP and Ubuntu, and I have 2 160gb HDD's in RAID 0.  Well,  Ubuntu does not read my HDD's as a RAID array, just 2 separate partitions.  So, before installing Ubuntu, I used the live cd, downloaded dmraid from the universal repository, then I made my ext3 partition and linux swap on the HDD that didn't ...
