I'm in the midst of helping my dad do some basic upgrades on his machine. It's a bit dated, but it suits his needs and he doesn't want to spend the money to build a new one.

Anyways, someone told me that if you had DDR3 memory it was backwards compatible with DDR2 and would just slow itself down according to the motherboard. Well, I bought this for his machine and it doesn't fit. The dividing slot in the ram is in a different position. Shows what I get for buying without doing any research.

We would like to upgrade his machine to 8gb since we just installed Win 7 x64. Since he bought his machine from a retail outlet, the specs (scroll to “Memory Upgrade Information”) were easy enough to find after I did some preliminary research.

From that it looks like it only takes 2gb sticks, but I don't know what the best value is? Speed isn't a chief concern, but we'd like to keep it cheap.

Upgrading RAM on netbook

I'm looking to upgrade my HP Mini 110-3030nr from 1 to 2 gb of ram. The stock ram is 200pin SODIMM DDR2, I'm looking to upgrade with this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231155, however I've noticed that there are some RAM units that fit my computer with cas latency values of 5 and some of 6. From what I understand, the lower the cas latency, the better. Does it matter which unit I buy as long as they are both 800mhz, 200pin so dimm, and ddr2?

just purchased this mother board http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157267... which says it supports DDR3 1866 ram so i was going to buy this ram for it http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233277, but in the details of this ram it says " Intel XMP 1.3 (Extreme Memory Profile) Support".... and i will be running an AMD processor on an amd platform.

is this ram compatible??

Im building a computer that ill be using for work, i work online bidding on things that i sell later on.

I know that for that sort of work i dont need a crazy computer but i still want to get some stuff that is not of cheap quality.

This is my first time building a PC (im not new to computers though) and i was thinking of setting it up like this: but i need your guys opinions on this.

I'm new at all this computer and internet stuff, even though I have been in the Computer Hardware Industry for 20+ years. PCB Desiger by trade. Worked on Unix Mainframes thru PC's. Used almost all OS's with the exception of MAC. Looking at the possibility of working for myself. Trying to decide what to do with the "Rest of my life". Currently un-employed, so my options are wide open. I'm a hard worker, and learn best, hands on. Residing in the NorthBay area of California, and prefer not to move.
