Is the Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 overkill for me?

Hey guys, just signed up because I love newegg and I am planning to build my first computer. I figured I would need some help.

Anyways, I am on a tight budget and I am trying to choose a good CPU for gaming. It doesn't have to be a top of the line i7 or anything, I just want solid performance in most recent games. I am looking at buying the Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Wolfdale 3.16Ghz 6MB L2 Cache chip. My only problem is it's $190. I can get a cheaper CPU, even a quadcore, but I just don't know a whole lot about CPUs so I'm not sure what I should go with. Is this chip more than I need just for gaming? I know that the GPU is probably the more important component when it comes to gaming and I plan on getting a GTX 260. I guess the real question is, can I get away with a cheaper chip than this? If so, any suggestions?

My first Newegg build, $750 performance system

These specs are preliminary, so please let me know if i'm forgetting anything necessary, or if their are any good cost trade offs I should make/ compatibility issues. (I'm open to significant changes, especially small performance losses for larger cost gains.)

Notes:

In 2-3 years I plan on upgrading my system to keep it current with a better graphics card, 16gb of ram, 2 additional 1TB HDD and a RAID 3 configuration, a 64-128gb ssd, and a new 6 or 8 core Intel processor, if Intel makes any for the LGA 1156 socket.

So glad I finally have the money to afford a new computer, so this system will be an awesome upgrade to my current 7 year old system with a single core 1.7ghz, 512mb ram, 80 gb hd, and ati radeon 9000.

Back Up Your Software To Protect Your Investment

Let me lay down the line before posting any. Please follow the forum rules to prevent this discussion from being locked. This posting is referring to backup only. Most all End-User License Agreements (EULAs) allow for the backing up or archiving of software for personal use which will state something similar to:

"BACKUP: You may make one copy of the Program from the files from the computer or disc solely for backup purposes. You must not delete the copyright notices on the backup copy." - summarized by me.

Keep this in mind when replying. Do not post any material that would violate the forum rules or any EULA. This includes creating an altered copy of software. Any posts must relate to only a 1:1 copy of the software. Keep it legal! Thank You!

Now on the to subject...

If you've been in my situation they you've purchased some software only to have the disc scratched and rendered unless and leaving you out of luck on an investment which could have ranged anywhere from $20 to $600 or more. I've had this happen with PC games, PC software, console games, CDs, and DVDs.

Over time I've learned some techniques and used some free software to create backups. I use iTunes to back up CDs, DVDFab HD Decrypter to backup my DVDs which creates a 1:1 copy, and for everything else I use CDBurnerXP. The best thing about all these software titles is that they are completely free. It doesn't get any better than free, reliable backup for your investments. However, I've been at a loss to find a free way to backup my console games (PS, PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360, etc).

I'm curious as to what you guys use and if anyone has found a way of backing up console games with having to purchase any software and without breaking any EULAs.

Looking for a notebook for college

I'm looking for a notebook I can use for college that can handle some gaming as well. I was looking at an Asus N50Vn-X5A (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220489R). Does anyone have some advice or opinions on this computer, seeing as it has no customer reviews?

Alternately, do you have any suggestsions of other notebooks that have fairly strong graphics cards that are also mobile and durable enough to carry around at university? My price range wouldn't exceed $1000.

Better card?

I am shopping for a new card, and I am only going to push $300. I have narrowed down my choices to two different GTX 275's and I would just like to know which of the two is better for hardcore gaming. The difference is that the first one is a superclocked edition of the 896MB version, and the second is an ordinary GTX 275 with 1792MB version. The first has much higher clock speeds, but the second has twice as much memory.

Need new PCI Express x16 Card that fits my case

I currently have a Diamond ATI 3850 1GB PCI Express x16 card that is crossfire ready. It is only at 8.5 inches long.

I want to add a new card to crossfire it with. I bought this card, SAPPHIRE 100270SR Radeon HD 4850 X2 2GB 512-bit (256-bit x 2) GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video ... - Retail

but it is 11.5 inches long which is too long to fit into my case. The card cannot be any longer that 9 inches to fit easily in the case. Newegg does not list the dimensions of the cards on their site so its hard for me to choose one. And, some manufacturers have the info available and many others do not.

any ideas? need more info? I run Vista Ultimate with this mb, DFI LP UT P35 T2R LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard. 8GB of Ram.

Focus on CPU or GPU

Hi, I am in the process of building a new computer. I am trying to build a computer that will be good for internet browsing, MS Office stuff, watching blu ray movies, and some casual gaming (like Call of Duty 4, Civ IV, NCAA 2010, etc). I am looking for a solid performer on a budget.

I have acquired an Athlon X2 7750 for free through a friend. I know it is not a really good processor, but to make my system a solid performer I figured I had three options:

1. Overclock the CPU and buy an impressive GPU since I thought GPU mattered most for gaming and what not (NOTE: I'm not looking into a crazy system)

2. Buy a new CPU and midgrade GPU (I do not currently have a GPU), which will cost a lot and I would prefer not to do.

3. Overclock the CPU and not buy a GPU (integrated HD3300 does alright)

My question is, should I just overclock my CPU and buy a really nice GPU? Would I have to add any fans or cooling elements to be able to overclock it? Is it even worth it to overclock it? Thanks in advance!
