If the data is not that important, then I recommend you just format the HD and reinstall the OS, let's say yeah good luck you fix the problem, but sooner or later you will curse that slow system and at last you will reinstall the system.

And if you need that switch, why not just choose a memory card? nearly all of the cards have a write-protection switch up there.

Do you have another video card to try on the mobo? since you've mentioned smell like burning...

How about trying to change a heatsink and fan? and also rearrange the case to make a better aeration environment also helps.
