• Re: Looking for some Holliday Help!

Thanks for the vote of confidence! You might want to check out a few other places, too, and not just use my list. I usually take 2-3 weeks planning out components for a new build. I'd stay away from Creative; i don't appreciate their business practices. They purposely disabled some features on existing Audigy cards when ...

  • Re: Looking for some Holliday Help!

You should not have any problems fitting these components into that case, with the possible exception of the video card. I have a GTX 260 that would not clear the drive cage in my Thermaltake mid-tower case. I had to use a dremel to cut a notch in the aluminum drive cage, and the video card blocks two drive bays. My suggestion for ...

  • Re: Looking for some Holliday Help!

Congrats! You can build a sweet machine for $2,000. since it is your first build, you might want to avoid multi-card GPU solutions (SLI or crossfire). Assuming you are not interested in overclocking, you don't need to spend a lot extra on the motherboard or memory, either (two mistakes I made with My first build - the money ...

  • Re: PCI-e x16 2.0 graphics card for PCI-e x16 1.0 slot

It should work with no problems, but know you would be more comfortable if someone with your mobo/gpu combo says ''yes, it worked for me!'' The only issues I could confirm were some very early VIA chipsets (PCIe v1.0a) having trouble with the earliest PCIe 2.0 cards (specifically, nvidia 8800GT's). Here is a sticky on this very ...

  • Re: How do i make custom plastic parts?

What kind of parts? Flat parts, such as panels and covers? 3-D objects? A 3-D printer should be able to do about anything, but i don't think they are cheap. http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/industry/4224759.html http://www.popularmechanics.com/automotive/jay_leno_garage/4320759.html In my junior high shop classes we ...

  • Re: Older PC/MB facing the future! Windows 7 era & me

I feel your pain with the lost CD code and the outrageous prices for replacement. Unless you are doing a lot of photo editing or something, Windows 7 will run fine with 4GB, such as this OCZ Reaper for $53 after rebate. You could get 2 kits if your heart is set on 8GB, but there really is no need to spend $160 for memory. In all the ...

  • Re: What do Eggxperts do with a new hard drive?

My testing has always involved putting the hard drive in the computer and turning it on to see if it is recognized by the BIOS and that it works. :) Seriously, I have never done any sort of testing before trying to use the drive, whether new, refurbished, or pulled out of another PC. I always do a ''long'' format the first time I ...

  • Re: PC won't boot up anymore

You might try just one stick of RAM at a time. It will probably run slower than ever, but may let you know if it really is a RAM module. I replaced a motherboard on a relative's computer recently, only to have the same issues until i tried different RAM. By going one at a time i found the bad stick. (The RAM worked fine ...

  • Re: [Poll] Ur favourite version of windows?

Call me crazy, but i really did like Me. I did not have any of the compatibility or stability issues people always harp about, and this first iteration of system restore seemed to work more successfully for me than XPs. My heyday of gaming was using Me from 2000 to 2005, when i built a new PC with XP. XP was good; i still have it on ...

I agree. I would rather interact with a game, using my mind and hand-eye coordination, rather than be a mindless zombie in front of the TV.

  • Re: XP SP3 system locking up

Finished the clean install yesterday; it is amazing how much faster this rig boots and responds! I've never seen such a big improvement without hardware upgrades, especially on an install less than a year old. I think it contracted some malware a while back, so maybe either i didn't get it all removed, or it did some other lasting ...

  • Re: XP SP3 system locking up

well, i managed to unlock the System Volume Info folder, only to find the reason none of my system restores worked was that the folder was empty except for a single restore point created today after i restored the original registry! But so far all the programs seem to be working. I'll keep backing up new files daily until i trust it again, ...

  • Re: XP SP# system locking up

Well, the first step worked, so i can at least boot into windows to get a list of all the software already installed in case i need to do a clean install. I was able to back up all documents yesterday. As I was typing this original post and seeing all the stuff wrong, i was starting to think in the back of my mind that a clean install ...
