Try using SyncToy from Microsoft. It's a neat copying tool.

Well if you right click on ''My Computer'' go to ''Manage'' then to ''Disk Management'', you should be able to see the hard drive there. If it's there, then you might want to format it. Just be aware, that you're essentially wiping the hard drive by doing a format, and getting it back to a 'blank' accessible state.

For receivers, look at what Onkyo has to offer. For speakers and a subwoofer, look at Polk Audio line. This Sunday there should be a good deal on a speaker through Shell Shocker, and chances are it'll be one from Polk Audio.
If you're on a budget, you can't go wrong with this.

Motherboards aren't known for giving ''noticeable increase in performance'', unless you start running higher end hardware in SLI or Crossfire, etc. Just get a comparable replacement, and with the money saved by not going with a higher end motherboard, you'd be able to get something that will actually yield noticeable increase in performance.

I'd just get a different router, usually I'd recommend a Linksys router, but right now Asus has a decent deal with free shipping (promo code: EMCLXNX52 ).

With a budget like that, I would get a Core i7 920 processor with a decent cooler, overclock it at least 20%...that'll help out greatly on the render times.
Also, look at these charts to decide which video card might be a better buy for Maya.
As far as RAM goes, don't go overboard on speed, since 3D programs like Maya, 3D Studio, etc. don't ...

You'll also get a free upgrade to Window 7 coupon.

Well, how about backing up external hard drive to an internal one instead. That way you can move you external hard drive from one computer to another, and still have a backup on an internal hard drive just in case. You'd even be able to access files on the internal hard drive since you'd have a back up copy of the files stored there.
-
Most people have an internal hard drive as their main 'storage' drive for MP3s, Videos, Photos....then they have an External hard drive that gets connected every so often to do a backup of the main internal storage drive.
You can also use the free app SyncToy from Microsoft to set up a 'backup profile', so when running a backup to the external ...

Judging by the blade profiles, one fan is an intake (bottom) and the other is an exhaust (top)/

Dunoyer:Doesn't seem that portable.
Hehe. What's not portable about it? You unplug 2 cables (power/data), you take the hard drive with you.
Anyways, could you specify what your definition of 'portable' is and what you'll be using the drive for. Also, why can't you use USB instead of firewire?

I don't think you need it, to tell ya the truth.

I would probably just buy a TV since a quality projector would be more of a 'luxury' item.
-
Ideally a projector should be located in a very dark room...either windowless or with thick curtains.
What's your budget anyway?
