URGENT: Need help accessing hard drive!

I just built a new rig and was reusing a hard drive to store some data.
But I passworded my windows login account on that drive so now
whenever I try to access my documents and settings, access is denied.

I have  many drivers and programs I need to access to get my rig up and
    running perfectly, please help. Thanks!

Yiou'll need to take ownership of the Documents and Settings folder on the old drive....

    • Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties.
    • Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one appears).
    • Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
    • In the Name list, click your user name, or click Administrator if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the Administrators group. If you want to take ownership of the contents of that folder, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.
    • Click OK, and then click Yes when you receive the following message:

You should be able to access everything okay then....

Re: URGENT: Need help accessing hard drive!

I have the same problem, and when I right click the folder and go to properties there's only 3 tabs - general, sharing, and customize. Tried searching through it all before but haven't found those options. Currently running XP Pro x64 but was locked while running XP Pro 32.  I haven't had access to this folder in about 2 years, it's just music on it so I haven't worried about until this post lol. Currently I'm not using that drive (PATA) as a boot drive either, I boot of my RAID5 drives. Should be enough info.  Frustrated

    Soon to overclock!

You should have posted your own thread, Please next time.

Did you try booting to safe mode and logging in as the administrator?

    {when you reply, you can click quote, copy everything in this post (theres a button on top), backspace the browser. and send me a pm, but better off, start your own thread please.}

Download a LiveCD and boot from it.  You should be able to read the drive with little trouble and copy your data to a different folder on the same HD.  You can use Ubuntu, Knoppix, or this boot cd I made with with BartPE and a Windows XP install provided it has drivers for your drive controller.

I have always had good results with the bootable Knoppix CD. You can even use USB flash drives in order to transfer your data, and since most USB flash drives are formatted with FAT32, there is no problems writing the files to the flash drives while in the Knoppix environment

Just a thought but the Security tab may not show up if you have "Simple File Sharing" setup (its setup by default) to turn it off...

Open any explorer window and go to Tools > Folder Options > "View" tab then all the way at the bottom of the scroll window the last checkbox says "Use Simple File Sharing"

Try that, i'm not sure if it works but its a thought, if not put the drive in another comptuer... if possible and copy the data over.

Both the -Sharing- and -Security- tabs WILL not show, if SFS is enabled.

PS: This will not help if the user encrypted his/her files using the windows Encrypting File Service.... You have to find the password or your Censored

Agreed - however, this is one key difference between XP Home and XP Pro - if you're running XP Home, you can't turn off simple file sharing, which sucks.

True, but the Administrator account in XP home still has that level of access.  Try booting into any 'safe mode' options.  Anything you wanted to change under your regular account can be done from there.
