Hey guys. I am interested in building a gaming desktop and have a few questions about compatibility. I have always been an Intel guy, but recently a friend told me about AMD, and that their slightly cheaper CPUs are just as good if not better for gaming than the Intel Processors. I've found an 8 Core AMD Processor, an ASUS (AMD design in mind) Motherboard, and two sticks of RAM at 8 Gigs each. I am really new to building a computer and would be very thankful if someone with more experience than I might take a second to double check these parts in relation to each other. I don't have a lot of Cash ATM, and would hate to buy the wrong piece. Thanks, Reed Links: CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103960 MLB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131754 RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233246

actually Intel is much better for gaming for that price you can get an i5 which is a much better choice for gaming. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-fx-pentium-apu-benchmark,3120-10.html
Core i5-2500k@4.6GHz, MSI GTX-560Ti Hawk, 8GB GSkill DDR3 1600, Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3, Corsair TX-650 V2, Plextor M5S 256GB SSD, Western Digital Caviar Black 1.5TB, Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB, Win7 Home x64, Cooler Master Storm Enforcer Case

Can I just suggest switching to intel? Intel i5-3570k is only 30$ more. You can also get a decent motherboard for the ivy-bridge processor such as http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157293. Also they're having a combo on the i5-3570k and the mobo I've suggested. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.985159. You're probably thinking that it's going to come out more but it won't. You can take 50$ out of your RAM because you will not be needing 16GB of RAM. Unless you're a video editor and work with video editing. You can get some Corsair Vengeance 8GB. Good low profiles so in case you ever overclock and get an aftermarket heat sink, it'll work out. But if you do plan on sticking with your AMD build, you should still cut your RAM down to 8GB if you're only gaming and doing everyday tasks. Good luck on your build!

Thanks for the input guys. I am wondering about how good the i5 is compared to the AMD I selected. Because right now I have a computer with i7 which runs great but is a bit slow (it may be my video card that makes me think its slow, I am not a computer guy) , I am worried that the AMD may be a good deal worse than what I have now. Also, I do edit videos and need a good deal of RAM because of the 3D rendering that comes with the software I use (Sony Vegas Pro 11 and Cinema 4D if you are curious). I believe that the rendering requires RAM as well as a good Graphics card. Is it worth just paying extra money to go from i5 to i7? And finally, could I still get an ASUS board with an Intel CPU? Thanks, Reed

the i5 is better in games, and if gaming is the primary use for this pc then it is your best choice. In terms of i7 it may save a few seconds of rendering/processing time but may not be worth the extra $100, definitely wont improve your games. laptop processors are alot weaker than desktop processors. what video card are you using? the programs will most likely use nvidia cuda. if you are looking in the same price range as the other board then you should get an Asrock, Gigabyte or MSI board, ASUS have great high end boards but their lower end boards arent of the same value (IMO) Alienware

The difference between the Intel® Core™ i5 and the Intel Core i7 really comes down to hyper-threading. The best way to think of hyper-threading is to think that it allows a second thread to enter the core and take advantage of leftover resources. If the application can take advantage hyper-threading you might find that you get around 10% additional performance due to hyper-threading. Most of the time for a gaming system it simply won't be worth it to get an Intel Core i7 on a gaming system.
GIgabyte and MSI are right up there with Asus on their boards. ASRock is producing some good value products. Intel boards have a reputation of being rock solid but not the most enthusiast friendly boards. We have been working to overcome this and the Intel DZ77GA-70K is one of the best high end boards I have work with.

I was planning on using an EVGA GeForce GTX 570. I did not plan to go with Nvidia because currently my Alienware has an Nvidia GeForce 555 and it has been giving me problems. I'm not sure if that was Nvidia's fault or the GeForce GPU, but again I am not a computer person and do not really know. Would my Laptop i7 that I have currently be as strong as a desktop i5? Thanks, Reed (Nice emoticon after Alienware, I've been feeling that way since I bought it -_-)

Help with finding the right Intel CPU
A few days ago I posted a compatibility check with an AMD FX 8150, an ASUS AM3+ MLB, and some Corsair Vengeance RAM. I was greeted with some advise about upgrading to an i5 because they were better suited for gaming. I had picked AMD because I had used Intel CPUs in all my former computers and wanted to try something different. I have done some more research and have seen that the i5 and i7 have no real difference in game performance, however the i7 is better suited for 3D Rendering and really video editing of any kind. I am an animator and also make in game videos, so the i7 may be what I am looking for. However, I am unable to find a model of the i7 that does not come with the Intel HD Graphics. In my current computer I have an i7 Laptop Processor and I have had a lot of trouble getting my computer to only use the Intel Graphics for IE, Google Chrome, and other simple programs that did not require a 3GB Video Card. However, the Intel Graphics still forced its way into my games and would run Skyrim, giving me some very poor framerate. I really just want a Processor without any built in GPU. That is part of the reason why I picked AMD. Is there anyway to get the Intel i7 without the Integrated Graphics? Or would I just have to live with them? Thanks, Reed

Re: Help with finding the right Intel CPU
I doubt you would have that problem with a Z77 MB and don't install the Lucid tech driver (or the Intel video driver) ... but you could use a P67 MB, or a socket 2011 MB [with compatible CPUs].
Freedom's the Answer. What's the Question?
