First Time Build. Please give your feedback/help.

    http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=24393927

This is what I came up with.  I intend to use it for gaming WoW and D3 primarily.  I don't intend to OC anything.  My budget is around the $1300 range give or take $25,or up to $1400 if I have no choice.  I unfortunately am forced to use a wireless connection and needed a case with more airflow than the haf 912 do to the room the computer will be in is a bit warmer than normal.  It should be mentioned I have never built a computer before and need something user friendly.  My main concern is if everything is compatible and if cooling will be an issue with this setup.  I also must mention that right now all I have is a laptop so other than a keyboard and mouse I need a full setup.  If I have forgotten anything that may be of importance please let me know.  I tried to choose items that have a combo deal so I can save as much as I can.  Thank you for the help.

Re: First Time Build. Please give your feedback/help.

FX CPU, it's pretty much awful for gaming from what I've read. You'd probably be better off at the moment for the Intel i5-2500, and a 1155 socket motherboard with z77 chipset. But if you're still wanting to go for AMD, the AMD Phenom II x4 or x6 would be great, but it might be hard finding a compatible motherboard as it takes an AM3 socket instead of AM3+

Also, you don't need a super expensive case for gaming. There are plenty out there that are much cheaper and provide amazing airflow. I'm sure someone else could better explain that though.

Re: First Time Build. Please give your feedback/help.

My internet has been down due to fires in state, so sorry about the delay in replies.  I understand that amd fx isn't the best but the less money the better.  I am a first time builder so if you could give a few choices for alternatives for cases and mobo for intel build it would be greatly appreciated.  I chose the haf xm because it has potential for upgrades in the future.  I don't mind spending a little bit more now if it means i can spend less when I upgrade again.

I also was wondering if I have all the connectors/adapters I need with this build, or if I will need any extenders ect.

Re: First Time Build. Please give your feedback/help.

    Viking67,

This looks like it will be a nice rig, and will be capable of most gaming requirements.

Compatibility aside (will comment on that separately if you like), the only suggestion I would make is to go for a speedier CPU, AMD or not.  See http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html.  You can get significantly speedier CPU's for not that much more money.  One thing to keep in mind (would like to see others comment on this), many games don't seem to see or utilize anything more than 4 cores.  If budget is a concern, take the suggestion to get a different case.  You can get a good one for $60 or less.

On connectors, be concerned about what is coming off the front of the case (the connectors you want?), and the connections available on the motherboard.  Also, check that the power supply has enough of the right type of power connections to power your components and peripherals.

We can get specific if you like, let me know.

Re: First Time Build. Please give your feedback/help.

Please do comment on compatibility.  It's not that im exactly set on the haf xm.  I'm just a little worried about cooling because the room I'm gonna have to put the computer in doesn't have any cooling and is usually about 10-15 degrees lower than outside temps.  I'm living in montana so temps can reach over 100 outside (The room has very non standard windows so getting window ac is out of the question unless i have over 2k and I need the pc more).  Any case suggestions are appreciated (I would like to have something fairly cool, quiet, durable, cheap, and have usb 3.0 and maybe 2.0 on front if possibile).  If I can get a good pc for gaming and more generic stuff for around 1300 tops that would be great. Thanks again to everyone helping me out.

@ OP,,, u can use the 965 Black with the AM3+ mobo as u can see here>>>  http://www.asrock.com/mb/cpu.asp?Model=990FX Extreme4 ,, if u want to go with AMD, that would be my suggestion,,once AMD gets there act together with the bulldozer problems u will be able to upgrade ur CPU then,, u can crank the 965 up and game away,,,u don't need a 6 or 8 core CPU, they will do nothing for gaming at all,,,

i would posit u keep the HAF 922 in ur list, the cooling is awesome with the HAF cases, especially with the 922 and up, prolly the best for the money on cooling Geeked ,, good luck with ur build Wink

    good luck with ur build

Interesting use case - a cooling challenge.  Have you considered water cooling?  Also, for cases as well as other items, see http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=4&Itemid=61

Seems to be a lot of good info you can use.

Re: First Time Build. Please give your feedback/help.

I'm thinking I'll go with the 922 with usb 3.0 instead of the xm.  The 922 is a little cheaper and I'm not a showy person so a painted interior doesn't mean much to me.  I really don't know anything about water cooling other than i hear the term water in the same sentence with pc and I cringe imagining a person pouring water over the pc.  I realize it is really more like a radiator.  I might consider it if I knew how to set it up and if I can fit it into my budget.  I found a carpenter who can install an ac unit in the computer room for $500 including parts labor and ac unit so the room temps are reasonable.

Re: First Time Build. Please give your feedback/help.

I would get this Video Card  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130759

I would also get this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135204 (cheaper and I trust more than the one you got)

I would get this Power Supplies http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139020 (If you the get GeForce GTX 480 )

The reason I changed the Video Card is because the GeForce GTX 480 is better than the one you got (My build is almost the same as yours:D )

And I changed mine and no regrets, just keep in mind GeForce GTX 480 was designed to run HOT!

IF you get that HD 6850 Video Card, you can get this Power Supplies http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171060

Good Luck! and I hope I helped ;D

Re: First Time Build. Please give your feedback/help.

Air cooling has always been adequate for my needs.  I know lots of gamers who use it routinely, but it does come at extra expense.  However,  a high ambient temperature might call on  a more powerful approach not reliant soley on air circulation.   For a better understanding, you might start here: http://www.frozencpu.com/cat/l1/g30/Liquid_Cooling.html?id=bUxJy8z6

Re: First Time Build. Please give your feedback/help.

Now here is a worthy processor you won't regret (the Intel based list)!  I just put together a build with a similar cpu, and this is a FAST CPU!  The rest of your choices are good, too.  Keep in mind everyone has their own experiences and preferences...be sure to read up on the sites which rank performance, and sites which have product consumer ratings.  For instance, I really like seasonic, but I might opt for a bit more powerful p/s given your intent for this machine.

Re: First Time Build. Please give your feedback/help.

I am unfamiliar with the term p/c.  Is that the same as psu?  I was also wondering what your opinion is on a psu.  Should a person go bronze or gold ect.  You all have been a HUGE help so far, and it is very much appreciated.

Re: First Time Build. Please give your feedback/help.

    he means PSU Wink

take a look at this to determine the power u will need when u decide on ur video card,,the PSU ratings r for the entire system,, http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/493743.aspx

then u can check out the EggXpert tiered PSU list and pick from tier 1 or 2 only,,,  http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/323050.aspx

also,, here's a good PSU calculater that when u plug in all ur hardware, will give u a pretty good estimate of the power u will need,,,save these links to ur favs for future reference,, they take all the guessing u sometimes get on forums when people try to help,,,  http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

    good luck with ur build

Re: First Time Build. Please give your feedback/help.

Take a look at the following link to get a better understanding of the power supply ratings.  They have to do with efficiency and therefore heat/noise generation of the unit:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/80_PLUS

Looks like if you can afford 80+ Gold, that's better.  I think there are a lot of reasonably priced power supplies on the market.

Re: First Time Build. Please give your feedback/help.

Ok, I've decided to upgrade the psu to a 750W model since there really aren't many 700w ones.  I added the seasonic one to wishlist but i was wondering if I really need it or any of these others would work just as well.  And does it make a difference if cables are sleeved or not.  I'm also wondering if I'll have reach issues now that I'm planning on using a full tower case (Thank god I have lots of room to put it).

I listed the seasonic as well for comparison purposes.  I also really like modular psus less clutter is always good imho.

I'm leaning towards the seasonic and corsair gold since i figure they will probably save me more in the long run.  Hey, I just found the editing button.  Guess it shows I don't post on many forums lol.

i'm gonna throw out this here 7 year warranty PSU for u to look at,,,it's not modular but u have a case with some of the best cable management with the HAF,,,,this PC P&Cooling 750 is only 90 bucks after MIR and free ship,, right now these r some of the best PSUs on the market,,,even without the MIR it's only 110 bucks,, if i needed a 750w right now this is the one i would buy  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703027  u can throw a party with the money u save,, or upgrade something else with it Wink

Re: First Time Build. Please give your feedback/help.

I'm still deciding on a psu but I'm in the stage of I know what I need and what I would like.  Right now it's just a question of me not being wishy washy and to make a decision.  I do have 3 final questions and I think I'll probably be set to go.  Will all my connectors/cords whatever be long enough, or will I need extensions due to my case and mobo?  Do I need, or should I get some thermal paste?  And finally, should I even bother with any of the extended warranties?  I'm gonna get a surge protector for now and upgrade to a good ups when I have the funs since the ones that are recommended are more than I can afford atm.  I'm pretty sure I have all the connectors I need.  And thank you everyone for all the help especially fatboyHD and RogueTrader.

TIM for 212 EVO,,,,  http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CE4QFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tomshardware.com%2Fforum%2F275547-29-thermal-paste-hyper&ei=F8j5T6fDG4SS9gTb1tnkBg&usg=AFQjCNG-iKoPqXP7FnAipeq0rkVI95604Q&sig2=lT8Axl_vXFAygvwx8FZIhg  the TIM included with the 212 is of very good quality, i would use that,,,,

u should be fine with cables supplied,,,several builds with 932,, which is larger than the 922, and i have not had to use any extension cables,,,,

i only advise extended warranty's with refurb products,,,usually  failures with new/non refurbished products wii occur during normal warranty periods,,, some exceptions may include TVs or monitors that have short ( 1 year ), warranty's,,,

    good luck with ur build

Re: First Time Build. Please give your feedback/help.

Back on the extensions...the only time I ever needed one is when I decided to go cheap and there were not enough SATA power connectors for the peripherals I was running.  Last time going cheap, too much of a pain.  Higher quality PSUs have everything you need.

Regarding thermal paste, the stock coolers that come with the CPU have that covered.  If you have to uninstall/reinstall, then you would need some; or, if you are using a non-stock CPU cooler.

Re: First Time Build. Please give your feedback/help.

yes I have the psu chosen.  I went with the corsair silver since it fit my price range better and I don't really NEED a gold rated one.  I just have to wait til next monday to order due to my current work schedule and my lack of trust in my light fingered neighbors.
