PSU gave a high pitched noise and shut down

    Hi,

I recently bought a 1000W Everest FSP Fortron PSU (80+ modular 2.2 ATX etc...) -supposedly a very good PSU-, and the PC it is powering is:

ASUS M4A79 790FX Mobo (New), AMD 9950 Phenom X4 140W, ASUS ATI 4890 VGA (New), and 4x2 GB Crucial Ballistix 800Mhz RAM, 500 GB WD Caviar Black HD (New)

System and PSU were stable for about 1 week, no excess heat or noise even under heavy load, until yesterday.

Yesterday, the PC had been running for about 8h, downloading and updating windows Vista, and then I started up a 3d game: Empire Total War, which is a very heavy application. And here is what happened:

1- The game was just starting when the PSU gave a light but noticeable high pitched noise and the whole PC shut down while laoding the game.

2- The PC wouldn't turn on and the blue light on the PSU switch was off. I turned the PSU switch on and off and the PC booted up.

3- I tried running the game again and the same thing happened at the same time and the PC shut down. Had the reboot the PSU from the k of the case.

4- I tried it a third time and nothing happened. Everything seems to be back in order now. All applications run without a problem even when the PC had been running for a long time.

I need help to figure out what might have happened, is the PSU bad? should I keep using it? Is it safe (i m afraid it will kill my new VGA card, and Mobo if it happens again). Anyone had a similar problem?

    Thank,

    Anton

Well, I would not call the FSP Everest PSU a good power supply.  It did miserably in testing at jonnyguru.com.

In fact, during that review, the power supply started squealing in one of the load tests.   The reason for that was that the power supply blew a component.  Also, it was putting out horribly dirty power after it blew.

So, you should not keep running your computer.  The dirty power that was put out during the JonnyGuru.com review could easily kill your hard drive, or other components.

By the way, seeing as how the Everest unit in the review was temperature sensitive, how well is your case ventilated?   Do you have a few case fans installed?

Re: PSU gave a high pitched noise and shut down

Thanks, I'll return it. Yes, I have lots of fans, 1x120mm + 1x 80mm blowing air out, 2x 80mm blowing air in.

Is there any way to find out it is giving out dirty power now (after that it started working correctly again).

Also, do you have recommendation for a good PSU, I might add another 4890 card in the next 6 months, and I prefer a modular PSU.

    thanks

Only if you own an oscilloscope.

Well, be sure to consult the Eggxpert Tiered PSU list.  Do you have an idea on how much you plan to spend?

Here's a PSU Power Search on newegg that should help get you started.

With just one 4890, i would suggest something like the corsair HX650. Very good power supply and more than you system needs.

but, if he's planning on stepping up to two video cards, he should get a power supply capable of it.

Re: PSU gave a high pitched noise and shut down

True. If he wants another card, in which case I would go for the HX750 if budgeting permits.

The original high pitched whine you are hearing is most likely the secondary output chokes vibrating at audible levels. Usually this is because the glue used to hold the core in place and keep from whining either missed it's mark or came apart. It won't hurt anything, but RMA it for sure or else you would have to live with it. The shutting down was probalby, as Compwiz pointed out, the overreactive OTP.
