Is there such a service?

    Is there such a service?

My fiance and I have (regrettably) been forced into a long-distance relationship.  We like to ask each other questions and write them down on a piece of paper, and swap them at the same time, so we see each other's answers at the same time.

Is there a site that does the same thing with emails?

Why not just use Windows Messanger?  You can voice / video to each other while you type in the answers and hit enter at the same time.............. Mission Accomplished. Did I mention its free?

    She doesn't have a microphone.

Isn't there AT LEAST an addition or extension to Yahoo IM that allows for something like this?  I mean, from the guys who brought us the co-browser, one of the most innovative IM extensions EVER, should think of something like THIS!  No additional hardware, just a simple download.

Microsoft bought out Yahoo! last year.

The windows messanger will allow you to talk to anyone on Yahoo! Messanger (fyi)

And Microphones are relatively cheep, can even get usb models. I personally can't think of a better way to do it.

I'm aware of that.  What YOU don't seem to be aware of is all the glitches that make the feature you suggest largely unfunctionable.

And Microphones are relatively cheep, can even get usb models. I personally can't think of a better way to do it.

Yes, keyword here being relatively.  When a motherboard can cost over a thousand dollars, lots of things seem relatively cheap.

Besides, the area she's in is rather noisy (it's a public Internet hub), so a microphone is the exact opposite of convenient.

Also, let's not forget that we always have the option of sending emails at the same time, at the count of three on our IMs, which is mostly what you're suggesting, but I want something BEYOND that, something that guarantees that our timing won't be off.  Sure, we CAN do this, and so far, we DO do this, but we don't WANT to do this!  The whole point of capitalism is supplying a demand for needs and wants!

I don't see much glitches on Windows Messenger. I'ved used the webcamera function and also the microphone functions and they seem to work fine. I talk to a lot of people outside of the United States with Windows Messenger.

Perhaps you can set a time on your e-mail to send out right at the minute, instead of pressing enter on a the count of three.

    What a strange couple..

But yea, you could write a little Java application that does this.. Or you could pay somebody else to do it.. It'd probably be easier to do with an IRC bot or something though which would basically just repeat what it's been "whispered" into the main chat at specific intervals..

it's a bizzare way to communicate..

how's $20 sound? Noise cancellation tech is a wonderful thing

Sounds like more than we can afford.

Look, are you going to tell me how we can accomplish our goal, or just give us ideas on how to circumnavigate it? After all,

You already received the answer. No need to be discourteous.

Honestly, if you can't even afford a $20 microphone why are you even asking?

Also, I use windows messanger for not only voice over internet, but live streaming video as well, and it works flawlessly. I suggest a better internet connection if you experience problems over it.

And do you have any links to these $1000 motheboards? Most only cost about $100, even high end server boards running Dual I7 CPU's are around $500.

All that that says is that I should write a Java application for it.  I don't know how.

I wasn't asking about a microphone.  I was asking about software.  You brought up the microphone.

Also, I use windows messanger for not only voice over internet, but live streaming video as well, and it works flawlessly. I suggest a better internet connection if you experience problems over it.

I've already got 1.5Mb/s.  What more do I need?

Well, when I have computer trouble, the shops tell me that, if it's the motherboard, the repairs can be as expensive as a thousand dollars.  Does that count?

Why don't you ask us the questions that will get us to help you fix your PC by yourself?

if you have 1.5Mb/s and can't do win messanger you have serious problems.

    List your PC's specs.

Honestly, you can build a NEW PC for less than $500 these days, so I guess you going a bit overboard in your replies (as a Moderator of these forums I am noting that) you need to start asking the right questions, and start relying with due respect, or suffer moderation.

(moderation = every post you make is read before it is viewable to the public, and dealt with accordingly)

Capitalism also involves spending some money for those wants..... I'm sure for $100, there are plenty of high schoolers out there who would love to write such IM application or IRC bot for you.

    dstebbins:

So why don't you use it?  Do a video conference with MSN or Skype and just write it down and show each other the paper over the cam?

Re: Is there such a service?

If $20 is over his budget, I think a $500 computer is out of the question.

    dstebbins:

Look, are you going to tell me how we can accomplish our goal, or just give us ideas on how to circumnavigate it? After all,

let's not forget that we always have the option of sending emails at the same time, at the count of three on our IMs, which is mostly what you're suggesting, but I want something BEYOND that, something that guarantees that our timing won't be off.  Sure, we CAN do this, and so far, we DO do this, but we don't WANT to do this!  The whole point of capitalism is supplying a demand for needs and wants!

My recommendation is to synchronize your watches and send your answers via instant messaging at pre-determined times.  This is probably the best solution for guaranteeing your timings are exactly in tune.

How exact does this answer reveal need to be?  Einstein's theory of relativity tells us that time slows down the faster we go.  This has been proven with suit-case sized atomic clocks being flown around the planet and 1 being stationary.  If your fiance travels far away, her watch could be fractions of a nano-second off depending on the speed and distance she traveled.  I recommend you read up on the Relativity of simultaneity.  Take this:

Your best bet is to satisfy Δx = 0.  This will help you determine the proper offset in pico-seconds of synchronization.

Next I would determine average latency between your computer and the computer your fiance is on.  Simply type ping [ip address] in the command prompt.

The important thing to note is the average latency you have and she has.  Take the difference and add this to the offset.

If everything is done right, and if you press send at the predetermined time by both you and her, you each should receive the answers at the same time (relatively speaking of course) with a fault tolerance of about + or - 5ms.  I hope that is within an acceptable range.

I spoke with a software rep at Yahoo!.  Unfortunately, he says that since the number of people desiring this functionality is currently 2 out of 6.8 billion, it isn't very high on their priority list to implement.  Right now I think the watch idea is the best one.

    Congrats on your engagement! YesCool

Agreed ... I also suspect that this is where the OP's hostility is coming from, not from our inability to appease him.
