    Career Question for Computers

I have always wanted to work on computers for the end consumer, such as you or me.  To take orders and build computers or upgrade existing systems.  Also to repair systems that have software errors and such viruses that make them unstable.  To maybe even one day open my own shop for this type of service.  What education is needed for such a career?  What degree and were should I get it?  Also, what is this career path called?

My other long term goal would be to work for a manufacturer and design new computers and hardware within a team.  To get the chance to work with companies like Nvidia or Intel on creating this new components and testing them.

    Re: Career Question for Computers

Well its a good question however you need to know what you really want to get in to and how much this education will really cost you in the end. Will it help or hinder what you are looking for really is another question you may want to ask your self. You have some great goals in mind no doubt about it. As for building, repairing and upgrading a PC the A+ by CompTIA is where you would start with that cert. Software such as most OS based they have their own certs, MCSE, Linux + ect...

If you want to work with Intel, Nvidia, ATI, AMD ect... you will need to start with a Computer Science degree and add programming languages in to the mix as well as great and superior math skills for designing systems.

    List of certs

    Re: Career Question for Computers

Another good cert to start out with is Network+ as a follow up to the A+ as many times, I also deal with network related issues that occur along with the hardware and software issues.

Best wishes on your career.  Yard by yard life is hard.  Inch by inch, life's a cinch.  If you decide on college, do it so you don't end up with a mountain of debt hanging over your head when you get done.
