The second carrier to have a Google Android available is Sprint and they came out swinging with the HTC Hero.

Google and Verizon announced a partnership last week that will see Google Android devices launched in 2010.

AT&T is the home of the iPhone and there has not yet been any announcements of a Google Android device being launched with them so there is no choice here when it comes to Android devices.

Apple is probably the main reason AT$T is late to the android party.  Also I noticed that AT$T has the fewest phones with a regular 3.5mm headphone jack ... hmmm.  

There's a lot of competition in this market, but I wish there were more competition within Android phones.  They all seem to have the same hardware as the G1 (CPU/chipset), but prices haven't come down the way one would expect.  Maybe I'm just sick of waiting for an unlocked HTC Hero with AT$T 3G, the FCC already approved it.

The Motorola phone originally hinted about as 'Calgary', then this weird name 'Sholes', then a potential 'Tao' has now seemingly been finalized as 'Droid'.   The phone is fast - unlike earlier units (G1) it uses same ARM Cortex8 architecture as Palm Pre and iPhone 3GS.   Capacitive 854x480 screen.   256MB RAM/512MB ROM, plus a microSDHC slot.   Android 2.0 OS, full-size 3.5mm phone jack.

Go to droiddoes.com  (See what URL does it redirect you to)   Note the 'November' at the end of the ad.    The countdown on the website has been decoded to run out on Oct 30, midnight - which confirms the previously leaked release date.  

There has been much speculation on 'how Verizon will cripple this phone'.  However, if you listened to the Oct 6 Verizon-Google press conference, it has been stated that this will be a truly open platform, a 'stock Android/Google experience'.  

Incidentally, my 'New Every Two' has come up in September.  

I am still taking this with a grain of salt, at least until I can testdrive the phone myself.

Actually, Droid/Sholes/Tao and Calgary are two separate devices, both intended for VzW.  Here's proof:

Interesting.  I, however, have a pretty good idea of what this 'A555 Calgary' is. 

Calgary was the codename for the original 3D concept renders of a Motorola/Verizon Android phone: a silvery slider with RAZR-style keyboard.  Never seen in physical form.  The actual physical model bearing most resemblance to it is the Droid(Sholes), so the assumption was that Droid is the final embodiment of the 'Calgary'.

However, it was known that Moto was making two Android phones.  The lower-end Morisson, with its rounded looks, is less like 'Calgary' in appearance, but much closer to it in specs.  Morisson has already emerged on T-Mobile as 'CLIQ'.  It was also known that Morisson was headed to Verizon as well.  I am quite convinced that this 'A555 Calgary' is, in fact, VZW's Morisson/CLIQ.

If you thought you were in Android heaven, think again. We’ve just been given the go-ahead from one of our Motorola connects, and what you’re looking at is the Motorola Calgary (that’s a codename you might remember) slated to hit Verizon. Let’s focus on what appears to be a pretty popular theme with Motorola’s recent comeback efforts: a decent low-to-mid range handset with BLUR, and a high-end super smartphone, both Android of course. This would give Verizon customers (mostly those fickle teenyboppers) a real smartphone completely positioned for their liking, instead of the featurephones which shall remain nameless that are currently available on Big Red. In terms of hardware, there’s three touch-sensitive Android keys on the display, an optical joystick which we’ve been told performs really well, a workable QWERTY keyboard, and it sounds decent as a phone. The Motorola Calgary also features a 3 megapixel camera, 3.5mm headset jack, GPS, digital magnetometer, Wi-Fi, microSD card slot, and spring-assisted slider.

Our connect has been testing it over the past month and said the OS builds running on it are incredibly smooth as well as responsive. It’s certainly no Droid, but hey, it doesn’t have to be. No hard release date but we might be looking at a Q4 release… Hit the jump for some more pics!
