HTC Takes A Bite Out Of Apple (HTC HD2 aka Leo)

... or I hope it does, anyway.  I know, I'm so punny Stick out tongue

HTC's HD2 gets official, we get our hands-on it (Updated: with video!)

Our friend Drita at Engadget Spanish was lucky enough to spend some extended moments with HTC's just announced HD2 -- also known as the Leo. It's got exactly the same specs we just heard about: a 4.3-inch WVGA capacitive display, a 1GHz MSM8250 Snapdragon processor, integrated FM radio, a 5-megapixel camera, Bluetooth 2.1, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. They found this Windows Mobile 6.5 baby to be elegant and light feeling in the hand, the touchscreen to be responsive and quick, and HTC's Sense UI beautiful. The phone's also quite snappy, and we have to say we can't wait to get our hands on one ourselves. As far as availability goes -- well, we know it's going to run €649 it will and be available in November on Vodaphone in Spain (we've also heard it's headed to T-Mobile UK), with additional carriers following after December. Check out the gallery, and head over to Engadget Spanish for a fuller hands-on experience.

Better specs than the iphone with a more productive OS ... and lookin' good Applause

    But wait, there's more!

HTC HD2 to arrive Stateside in early 2010 -- huzzah!

Snap, looks like that painful feeling in our gut was just from that late-night Mickey's sesh after all. HTC's Peter Chou told SlashGear today that the monstrous, amazing HTC HD2 will be coming to the United States of America sometime in Q1 of 2010. That's not too far off, but let's be honest -- it's gonna be a long wait.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

As much as I was anti-iphone at first, I must say I dont think anything will take out hte iphone for a LOOOONG time. Mainly because of the App Store.

Apple wins the Aplication war because all of the "trendy" people who think they are unique all bought iphones to love apple like the sheep they are. And with the easy development for the phone and the peoples willingness to spend 10 dollars on simple apps, the iphone has a strong foot hold now. And it will be hard to pry it away at this point.

I doubt HTC will have a good app store like the iphone, and the app store is what makes the iphone what it is.

Actually, it's Microsoft that's running the new 'windows marketplace' for WM 6.5.  There won't be thousands of apps at first, but give it a little time. [EDIT: there are thousands of apps available for WM around the web] Besides, you have WMP, Word, Excel, and Power Point right out of the box ... that has to count for something?

The app store doesn't live up to its hype, IMO.  I have an ipod touch, I know from experience.  They brag about the number of apps in the app store, but 99% of all apps are garbage.

But I'm off on a tangent, my original post was more about hardware than anything else. That phone looks pretty impressive to me, both in appearance and in specs...

I do prefer windows based phones, just disappoints me that it took this long for windows to be put on a decent phone.  All other windows mobile phones in the past were pretty sad, except for the Black Jack series IMO.

The problem with Apple is that while they do have applications that you can download, they don't really come with the phone. A lot of people, like me, want or check on a phone that has the functions required out of the box. You don't buy a car thinking if you can fix it up, well at least I don't, I buy it for what it can do right after I drive off the floor.

The HD2 looks nice, except it looks freaking huge! =P. WinMo store doesn't seem that great, maybe WinMo 7 will be better =P.

Huh?  iPhone has all the requisite functionality right out of the box - calling, contact management, messaging, email, web browsing, media playing, you name it.   It is definitely a 'fully drivable car'.   The extra apps are the aftermarket accessories: seat covers, sport pedals, custom wheels, decals, ski racks, you name it.

The thing about appstore is not the quantity or quality of the apps - it is the one-stop-shop convenience of the whole process.   Apple took control of this, and decreed that one and only way to legally install apps on an iPhone would be through AppStore - means Apple gets to screen the apps and decide what to allow and what not to - but for the consumer,, looking for extra functionality means one thing - going to AppStore, doing a search and picking from a list of results.   And it is guaranteed to be compatible with iPhone and not brick it - or do some other nasty stuff.   As with a lot of other things about iPhone: convenience, convenience, convenience, the magic consumer word.

Windows Mobile platform likely has as many apps developed for it as iPhone, but it is blasted disorganized.   Want to find something that does what you need for WinMo?   Be prepared to scour fan sites and forums for hours, looking for an app that is actually compatible with your type of device, version of WinMo, and is not some sort of malware.   Gotta say, though, finding things you need got a whole lot more organized lately.   But it's still no AppStore.   For Google Android Market to succceed, it needs to be comprehensive.   Apple uses stick approach - for a developer, it's either AppStore way or the highway.   If Google wants an open environment, it needs carrot approach: rather than enforce Android Market as the only method of distribution - it should simply make it the best and easiest one.   Easy for developer to post/update his work, easy to get feedback from users, easy to get paid if the app has a cost.

That functionality is not critical for a consumer-level communications device.   It is special-purpose stuff for those who need it.  In a business/enterprise oriented device, Office/pdf would indeed be a requirement.   But iPhone is just that - a phone.    My WinMo phone came preloaded with Word, Excel, Powerpoint and a pdf viewer - I probably used all of them combined less than 10 times in the year and a half I had the device - and I use it fairly heavily.   Heck, a PC with a fresh OS install can't open .pdf and has only rudimentary Office stuff (Wordpad) But it got the critical stuff: ability to manage all your system resources and an interface to install and run whatever apps you may need.

The path to success is to identify the features critical for your target market and making sure they work reliably, are highly accessible and easy to use.

Actually, there's an app for that!  For about $20 extra

    $20 extra haha.

I haven't seen a phone with a hard OS to use so far. I'm surprised how people get lost using a Symbian device. =P.

Any phone can be used as a regular phone. Guess 'looks' is more important.
