Yahoo or Gmail for web based email & why

Do you use Yahoo or Gmail...or other ...and why?

I actually use both, but am becoming drawn more to Gmail.   One thing I like about Gmail is that I am able to use https interface.

I've also had some flaky things happen on Yahoo mail... fairly brief but way annoying.

    What do you think?  Confused

Gmail has themes, labs, great contact management (it's awesome for iPhone and sending to specific groups of people). Ymail... I don't even know why I have it, I think I just made one for eBay and Answers.

I like Gmail and you can use a lot of other features at the same time.  One thing that impresses me about Yahoo! is that the spams. I always get 30+ spams per day.

    I have a hotmail.

reason 1: My teachers and most of my friends are using it.

reason 2:  If you forget to check your email account for a long period, you will lose your account.

Yahoo mail gives you 4 months; Gmail, 6 months; Hotmail, 9 months.

    Which is more stable? lol

Thanks IntelGuy et al for the input !.....appreciate each and every one.

The one good thing I could say about Yahoo mail is that they have vastly improved their spam filtering over the early days.

That's probably true of them all.

Re: Yahoo or Gmail for web based email & why

I have both, but prefer yahoo mail because I don't like how gmail groups messages together.  It makes it a pain once the message gets very long.  However setting up an email client in way easier with gmail.

Re: Yahoo or Gmail for web based email & why

I have Gmail, Yahoo and an old Netscape accounts and I like Gmail first, Netscape second and Yahoo third.  The main reason is that Gmail has POP servers and this allows me to use Thunderbird for email and it works great with it.  I have used Thunderbird and all its previous incarnations for well over a decade.  The same goes for the Netscape account regarding Thunderbird.  Yahoo might offer this now but as recently as last year they did not.

Re: Yahoo or Gmail for web based email & why

Wow Mike, you know I honestly hadn't considered that.  Yahoo still charges for POP access.

I do sometimes wonder about leaving mail on the server.

    Good input.

Re: Yahoo or Gmail for web based email & why

I have an email record for my business that goes back to the mid 1990s and with Thunderbird I can transfer it, or back it up, from one computer to the next very easily.  I can also search through those emails by date, sender, subject etc. with Thunderbird.  With Gmail I can just keep adding to my email archive seamlessly and, as you noted, it is free.

Re: Yahoo or Gmail for web based email & why

I have both as well but use Yahoo.  I've just had it a lot longer and most of my family knows about it.  I've never been crazy about how gmail handles the messages.  Maybe that will change in the future, IDK.

Re: Yahoo or Gmail for web based email & why

I have Gmail. It's search feature has me spoiled. I hate using anything else because I can't search. It's a pain at work because I've got thousands of emails, but I put them in archived folders to sort of help the lack of searching. My school (don't really use that email address anymore since I graduated) as well as webmail at work migrated to the new Outlook exchange server, and it sucks. If you're in an email and delete it, it opens the next message instead of going back to the inbox.

I also have a Verzion email account, which I never use, but it's pretty clunky like most others. I had hotmail until I stopped using the account because it kept getting clogged with spam. Of all the ones I've used, I think Gmail has the best spam filter. Hotmail was years ago and was terrible. But I don't use the others enough to really guage. Well, except for my school account, which has a terrible spam filter.
