Lightning [li] Legend of the Red Dragon (LORD)

    All,

I have put up a Legend of the Red Dragon (LORD) server for us all to play on.  Older folks 'round these parts may remember this game.  It truly is one of the best ever.  Newbies.. now is the perfect time to check it out.

There's an informational site I set up here:  http://www.fizzworld.org/lord/

It will tell you how to get up and playing.  Be sure to read the 'notes' as I call out some specific issues you might have.

    Enjoy!

Re: Legend of the Red Dragon (LORD)

Hehe, back in the days when I played LORD, I was doing it on a 2,400 baud modem (2.4kbps) and so I didn't have a chance to become impatient on the input since I spent all my time waiting on the PC.. Now that everything is lightning fast, it kills the nostalgia and I don't have to sit there waiting for the text to scroll up on the screen one line at a time..

And for the life of me, I can't seem to get it to look right in Putty.. I know the game looks a lot better once you get your terminal set up right..  Honestly, it looked a lot better on my dad's old 20 Mhz running Procomm than it does on my 2.0 Ghz Pentium M.. So I think something is wrong with my Putty terminal.  I tried all the different terminal emulators and it didn't seem to make a difference.  The splash screen and everything is all colored ASCII characters when I know it should be blocks of color (like legos)..

Luckily I'm here to help you out.. and share some overall news:

First off, the website for this has been updated.  The old link still works (above), but it just redirects you to the new page:

http://lord.fizzworld.org          (same address used for telnet, except http in this case obviously)

If you go there, you will see a few things that may be of interest:

    1)  A way to use Windows telnet instead of PuTTY.  I personally think it works better.  And you won't have the same issues with graphics.  (Click the "Connect" link)

    2)  The proper way to set up PuTTY, so it doesn't look like b*** ***e.  (Click the "PuTTY" link)

    3)  A Java Applet that connects right to the server from the web. (Click the "Web" link).  This will look great also... in fact, it might even look better than all the others.  Definitely worth checking out.

In response to your old modem, yeah those were the days.. I played on a 14.4 modem... we later upgraded to a 56k, but that was when the internet started coming into play.  If you'd like, I can lock down one of the nodes to be super slow for ya ;)   (No, I'm not really going to do this. haha)

Re: Legend of the Red Dragon (LORD)

So what hardware and software are you running the server on?

Are we going to see other games like P:TEOS (Planets: The Exploration Of Space)?  TEOS is another great game, made by the same group of people who made LORD I think..  I always liked TEOS better than LORD because it was Sci-Fi.... At one point I had a registration for TEOS for my Quest-Online BBS..  Really only had my friend dialing into it though..  Even with 2 players, it's loads of fun..  My parents got angry about the fact that I was always hogging the phone line..   The computer would automatically answer the phone and give whoever called a good screech.. Wasn't long before telemarketers stopped calling us altogether because they thought it was a fax line...   Good times..   I always had problems with my BBS Fossil driver, everytime somebody came back from a MUD, their whole screen would get flooded with junk and then they would get hung up on by the BBS software.. Never did figure that out, but since it was just my friends that called, it wasn't a big deal.

Good to see your server working so well, and very curious about your software setup..

It's probably a lot easier these days to get it up and working than it was 15 years ago..  Back then, if you didn't have a 100% Hayes (name-brand and expensive) compatible modem, you had all sorts of headaches trying to get everything to communicate properly..   From the BBS to the Fossil driver to the MUD and then the whole thing in reverse...

Re: Legend of the Red Dragon (LORD)

Really? I ran Renegade just fine on a US-Robotics, I think it was. :P  But same as you, it was just me messing around with some folks.

Nowadays there are a lot of "telnet-capable" BBS packages.  MysticBBS, Syncronet, etc.  I'm actually running GameSrv, which is a lightweight package used to really only provide a gateway for Doors.  It's running on Windows Server 2003.

I don't really have an intentions of putting up other games, unless there is big enough of a crowd to warrant it. :)

Re: Legend of the Red Dragon (LORD)

After you lost all those defense points, I was able to kill you in one hit..

At least you still have Violet to yourself...I lost most of my charm recently with a string of bad luck...

Dalphine keeps going back to the cave and getting lost..  Like that day last weekend where she got lost in the cave 4 times in the same day and ended up coming home with a different "rescuer" each time..You don't think she might be cheating on me, do you? Big Smile

Oh, and Lily beat me up on the dance floor for trying to steal a kiss.. It sucks having no charm..

You'll have to be more specific.. did you already create an account?

When you first sign on, it will say,

    Enter NEW to create account

    What is your UserName:

So, obviously, if you dont have an account yet, enter "NEW" and it will walk you through making a new one :)

    Enjoy!
