Here's hoping Microsoft can free the internet

Quote ------ "GOOGLE'S ultimate rival, Microsoft, is taking on the giant search engine company with a $100 million service that will be called "Bing". Not a bad name and not a bad idea. I hope it can make headway.

Twitter, a "tracker" website, is a useful alternative on certain subjects but not for everyone.

Wolfram Alpha, the previous alleged Google killer, turned out to be a good data sorter though nothing to threaten the monster that now has a database of your every move on the web, along with a picture of your back garden (on Google Earth). "

    .....

Who will be the final winner?  What's your take on this?

As far as I am concerned, Bing may be the beginning of better days for all concernedSmile(See the source here)

Microsoft freeing anything would surprise me. Unfortunately their history has them always losing a foot to lead they discharged themselves.

I would like to try bing! but since it is not ready yet I cannot and do not want to keep waiting; I like to try things DURING the hype not POST-Hype.

Re: Here's hoping Microsoft can free the internet

prolly Microsoft will win because they are richer lol but seriously though they will probably beat Google buy them out close Google or add there stuff to there own then try and charge people to use it, idk Im just wierd with microsoft i love and hate them at the same time like look at XP one of there best operating systems (after they got it running right) supported as much ram as your pc could handle, fast and stable, vista unless u spend alot of money or ultimate you can;t have more than 3.5gb, and you can't watch dvds unless u buy higher than home basic or find 3rd party codecs which can be annoying but yeah i wouldnt be surprized if they didnt try and profit by consumer and not by advertsing (like how google makes there money)

Nakuvamp, there are so many holes in your argument, I do not have the time nor the patience to explain in detail so here's a rundown.

    1) People are at status quo with Google right now.

    2) MS always finds a way to fail their way out of the market

    3) Vista supports well over 4GB of memory in the EXACT same way XP does/did; through the use of a 64-bit OS instead of 32-bit.

Re: Here's hoping Microsoft can free the internet

My take is none of the above. Good luck with Bing - competition is always a good thing, but no lock is permanent. The next wave will come along and become the new battle ground. When you think of each wave of evolution in the information age, what comes to mind?

    • Mainframes - IBM?
    • Minicomputers - DEC?  HP?
    • GUI - Apple?
    • Personal computing - Microsoft?
    • Internet search - Google?

What company has ever owned two waves in a row? No matter how much resources a company has expended trying to own the next wave, they ended up being an also-ran.  A smaller (at least initially) more nimble company came along and made a commercial success of it even though they weren't necessarily first. Who was first with those commercial products? Admitting in advance that there will be differing opinions, especially considering I am not that much of an historian, here is a quick list for comparison:

    • First commercial mainframe - Univac I?
    • First Minicomputer - IBM 1130?
    • First GUI - Xerox PARC Star System?
    • First personal computer - Apple?
    • First internet search engine - Archie?

What's the next wave? I dunno, but I'm betting the big kahuna will be some other newer smaller company that sees that next wave coming and is nimble enough to do something about it. And we may not even know that company's name yet.

Actually, I tried Bing for the first time today. Nice! I tried a search that had yielded no usable results on Google, and Bing also came back with no usable results. But, with the nice aesthetics on Bing, I felt much better about not finding anything. I also found it comforting to have searched the Internet twice and had such consistent results.  Smile

Re: Here's hoping Microsoft can free the internet

I love their commercials, but bing has search underload. Bing indexed my site before Google did but I know it won't become as big as google. Maybe if they had kept the name live search or MSN search.

Re: Here's hoping Microsoft can free the internet

MS never learns from their mistakes (and when they do, it's usually far too late). Live Search has failed for a few reasons, one of which being it may be 'simple' in function, but not in design. They need to remove the default 'backlay' image they use. It is very cool, don't get me wrong. I actually really like it, but frankly Americans/people in general are far too stupid/lazy to deal with that. If it takes so much as a millisecond longer than Google to load, people won't bother.

Bing is cool, but I just do not know. I feel the largest majority of their 'new revolutionary features' have existed for years before. I do not like the concept of Public Relations 'reinventing the wheel' but playing it off as their own. IE: Sprint started the idea of TV on your cell phone in a large-scale. I have that service for free (looks great, just not much I like), but now AT&T is claiming it's revolutionary and ripping customers off for it. Sorry, but I can't stand that c**p; Sprint's service is exceedingly better than AT&T's in call quality/data speeds/everything. Phones are questionable, but after using the Palm Pre, that is a pretty darn solid device...
