This weeks project, OBD II to RS232

Hey folks, just finished another project.  Took about 2 weeks from concept to product.

Anyways, what this does is act as a middle man between the car and the computer.  It lets you read the codes that cause the check engine lights as well as clear them.

But the real bonus is that with this, you can read engine stats in real time.  RPM, O2 sensors, temps, emissions and all that jazz.

Pictures are at the link below.  Have a look

Let me know what you think

    Cheers,
    Kunzy

Coulda just let ya "borrow" the software and you could just use a strait Serial cable to read it Whistler

    Nice job though Applause

You can do it with just a serial cable?  I thought that was just for the first gen OBD systems.  Isn't it?

Re: This weeks project, OBD II to RS232

First gen was mostly just General Motors, and there was an array of varied adapters / software needed. Second gen is after the EPA took GM's computer and forced all cars sold in america to have the system installed. After that they "standardized" the connector, and most cars can use the same software to be read with. Big Smile

You know you can download the cars "paramiters" into your PC, change them, and load the new software back into the cars computer?

Can change just about everything, fuel, spark curve and timing, vehicles top speed, radiator fan on/off temps, transmision shift points, shift firmness, even make adjustments as to how certain sensors are dealt with (TPS, ECT, MAP, MAF, CPS, etc.)   Although, its a very "advanced" level thing to do, just as risky as flashing a BIOS, and 100 times harder to do since you have to define all the parameters yourself.

I actually just Flashed the computer in my Trans-AM last week, took me a few weeks a couple hours every night to re-write the program, but it was totally worth it, now My speedometer is accurate, engine is timed to the larger bore and bigger camshaft, top speed is now 256 MPH, (no idea if it will hit it, but I bet it will hit 225) and I retarded the Ignition timing for the first 4 seconds so the starter can crank it over easier (12:1 compression) and the factory setting for the radiator fan was to turn on at 235f and turn back off at 212f and I just couldn't have that, lol, I changed it to turn on at 205 and turn off at 180 (have a 140f Thermostat in it so I can do that). And believe it or not, I actually get better gas mileage now Woohoo

    ............dang dude.......................

What did you use to edit the engine parameters?

GM's  Big Smile   Had to do a few small hacks though.

Used to works at a dealership Stick out tongue

Hardest part was all the math on the new engine and gear ratio to set the timings, shift points, and fuel mixture wanted to make sure I got it all perfect.

Considering it took 9 months to restore/build the car, wasn't so bad.

Was wrecked in the front, so had to do some bending, then put on new fenders, hood, windsheild, bumper. replaced the front balljoints, struts, tie rod ends since they were wore out, steering columb and air bag since the car had been stolen at one point, and rebuild the power window tracks since they were broken, alsobuilt the motor and trans, then had to redo the rearend since it couldn't hanlde the new horsepower. And then painted it.

Re: This weeks project, OBD II to RS232

I am impressed with both of you!.....and thanks for sharing.

I just bought an OBDII code reader from Harbor Freight.  I didn't think OBDII was quite RS-232.  So are you saying 96 cars and up can be read with an RS-232 interface?   (Then you need software of course)

    "Cool".

Good and bad, I define these terms
    Quite clear, no doubt, somehow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
    I'm younger than that now.

You were able to do that in 9 months???  Holy c**p dude, I know you are a mechanic but wow dude.  It takes me forever to do some of those.  tie rod ends usual take me ~3-4 hours and then I dont dare drive it till I can get it aligned.  Steering column took me almost 2 full days to change(course we basically had to rebuild the key switch on the side of the column a couple times, barely makes all the contacts now).  haven't dare try the power windows on any vehicles, not enough room on the one i looked at and I didn't feel like popping the rivits cause i didn't know how i was going to get them back on.  And I even have the rivit gun.  To change a motor took me, my dad and my brother almost a full summer.  And the only thing i've done on the back end is change the seal on the rear differential and that took a few hours (that smell totally caught me off guard, I gagged)

    Dang dude, thats quick.

I don't think that OBD II cars are.  I know you can do it with some OBD I cars.  GMS, you want to clear this up for us?

haha, yea mazy, its finally done.  Also, Facebook decided the schematic I put up was too big and killed the quality.  There is a better quality picture of the schematic here:

    cheers

Yea, lol, and that was only on the weekends.

I pulled a scematic from Mitchel-on-demand for you.

However you don't need the ELM323 chip if you have the right program.

dang dude, looks like i didn't do all my homework on this one.

But eh, it works for me.  I actually hooked my circuit up to my bros camaro and it was pretty neat.  I have a drag strip app that does all the little times like the 1/4, o to 60 time and a bunch more.  Its kind of fun.

Cool, does it show average fuel mileage and all that jazz to?

Re: This weeks project, OBD II to RS232

Nah, it just shows/graphs the instant.  It doesn't calculate the average.

But yea, it was able to pull off of ~54 sensors at once. Throtle position, MAP, MAF, spark advance, RPM, MPH (to the thousandth for some reason), Engine load, bunch of stuff for the O2 sensors, engine coolant temperature, could read engine codes, pending codes freeze frame and clears them, list goes on.

It's fun, I enjoy my little black box :)

I still think we could have a very nice section dedicated to cars....modding, maintenance, technology.
