How to use eSATA (external enclosurs and adaptors)

I have noticed that there are many people posting bad reviews on eSATA products because they were not able to connect there eSATA device(s) to their system. In particular this is true for people using the USB to eSATA adaptors. Below I have written a guide on how to connect these devices and show how to force your computer to detect their presents.

First there are a few things users must understand about eSATA connection.

    1. Unlike USB and Firewire, eSATA does not have constant power running through the port, (in most cases), which means that they your computer can NOT auto detect when you plug in your device.

    2. eSATA devices do not attempt to connect to your computer until the computer send a detect signal through the cable.

In order to connect an eSATA device that is not being auto detected to your computer you must do the following:

For Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Win 7 Beta (x86, or x64):

    1. Right click on "My Computer" for XP users, or "Computer" for Vista users.

    2. Click on "Manage"

    3. You should see a "Computer Management" window appear. On some systems this can take some time to open.

    4. On the list of choices locate "Device Manager" and click on it.

    5. Click on any of the devices in the device list.

    6. A small unlabeled icon will appear, looks like a computer with a magnifying glass over it, in the top of the "Computer Management" windows. Normally under or near the "Help" menu. Hover your mouse over this icon it should say "Scan for Hardware Changes"

    7. Click this icon the your computer should send the detect signal and install your new device.

This may take a few minutes even of faster computer systems.

This may need to be done every time you connect this device. l

If there are any Linux/Mac people out there that can add a section on how to do this in those other fine OS's that would be very helpfule.

    Nide :)

Re: How to use eSATA (external enclosurs and adaptors)

I'm having that problem with this product, the Rosewill RCW-618 USB to IDE/SATA Adapter. It works fine with an sata disk I pulled out of my rig, but when I try it with a brand new, unformatted disk, system recognizes the enclosure as a USB mass storage device, but the disk inside does not show up on either disk management or my computer. I'm using a seagate barracuda 7200.10. Their site says no jumper adjustment is needed. Clicking on "scan for hardware changes" doesn't help.

Can someone tell me, is this device intended to let me put in a brand new disk and format it, yes or no?

If the answer is no, then it defeats the purpose..

     Suggestions and ideas appreciated!

     Thanks very much,

     Loeteke

Connecting a SATA connection to a USB adapter DOES NOT = eSATA, and does not require the above instructions.  When in an enclosure, when the enclosure is turned-on the device will be detected.  With 'adapters', power should already be there, just plug-in the USB cable and the device should be detected.  Some adapters do not like some hard drives.

In the 'real world', not all X to USB adapters work with all disk controllers.  I have several I work with at my shop, some older, some newer...one of them will usually work.

then it is only completing the "recognizing and installing" on 2 of the 3 devices needed for your disk to work, and it appears that it is not communicating properly with the controller in the Disk.  There is not much you can do to 'fix' this if neither device is broken per se (either one could be malfuntioning, but you'd have to try it with another and test,) they just do not seem to 'play' well together.

The only reason you would 'need' a jumper is if the Adapter was a SATA150 device and the hard drive was a SATA300 device.

    yes it is.

use a different Adapter (which is why I have several,) or use a different hard drive.  Since the adapter is both SATA150 and 300 compatible, there is no need to load new firmware into the hard drive to force it down to SATA150.

Make sure you have Power to the Hard drive......what hard drive are you using ?  [I see it.  Use the SATA power connection if it has both.]

here at my Sisters, they have an enclosure that will not initially (when turned-on,) work, nor does any amount of tinkering with Computer management make it recognize it......The USB cable must be removed from either the box or the PC and pluged back-in before it will 'recognize' it.  It just needs a delay, so now they do not plug it in until AFTER the power to it is already on.  [power-on 10-count, plug it in.]

I have a bytecc, Vantec, Syba, one really old ide one....cant remember

    Tallon!

Thanks for the rapid response, especially to my main question! I've already tried everything you suggested w/o success, which makes me feel better, since I wasn't that far off. The good news is that minutes after I posted this, Rosewill sent me an prepaid RMA label! They seem to think there may be a problem with their card.

Can't wait to get the new one and try it out!

    Thanks again,

     Loeteke
