    Check out Newegg's Silverlight Demo

    Greetings Eggxperts,

We would like to get your feedback on a Silverlight demo we have been working on. We are conducting some internal testing and would like to know what our Eggxperts think about it as well!

Please note: You will need to install Silverlight in order to test out the page. This is not an official release.

Give it a try and let us know what you think!

Looks good, and worked well for me.

Although, when you first open it, the pics could be bigger to see better details of the products.

I love the live search, start typing and the page moves around with every letter typed, a very nice add-on Yes

Not trying to hijack this....but I've avoided Silverlight..... "We're from Microsoft and we're here to help you!"

How about a few words from someone on what Silverlight is and what it does....and how mature it is?

Good and bad, I define these terms
    Quite clear, no doubt, somehow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
    I'm younger than that now.

Silverlight is basically Microsofts version of "Flash" It's matured quite a bit in the last year, but still has a ways to go I'm sure.

It's an add on for IE only?

The only place I've ever been prompted to load it ... was on Microsoft's site.

I thought it was IE only....apparently not.

Re: Check out our Silverlight Demo

This is a cool idea and hopefully will come to be a nice addition to the page.  It works fine in Firefox 3.0.4 for me!

The only thing that I don't like is that it doesn't scroll with my mouse wheel, you have drag the bar.

I like it....  I am almost always price driven...so I could see that demo being very useful for me.

I for one liked it. Could definately see this being the next big trend in e-tailing. Insta-find what you're looking for sounds cool to me and the demo works nice. Well done!

It works is Opera. So if someone gets the message from MS about that it will not work in the browser disregard it.

Re: Check out Newegg's Silverlight Demo

Looks awesome, but there are a few things that i would add.

A compare checkbox you can use to compare items, I would also like to see the compare feature in a similar manner to the demo you have showed us.

A quick specs button.  You have it right now in the search, why not include it.  I know you can look at the pic and then View Details.  But it would be nicer if it would pop up and give a little about itself when you hover over it for a few seconds or something like that.

This is a really nice setup, it works fast and smooth.  Only problem i see is getting everyone to download and install silverlight.

    EDIT:
For those that like linux, they have a version out that will let silverlight work with linux called Moonlight

Just go to the demo page and find your way to the download.  Still working on getting a working version for ubuntu.  Will post back if i get it to work.  You need silverlight 2.0 to use the demo newegg made.

     EDIT EDIT:
the moonlight 2.0 is still in pre-Alpha stages for Linux.  So I give up.

Re: Check out Newegg's Silverlight Demo

Yeah it looks really, the only thing for me is that I'd probably end up using the original interface anyway =P.

But nevertheless on my preference, nice work, everything goes really smoothly.

Re: Check out Newegg's Silverlight Demo

Silverlight is the flash killer.. For far too long Flash has had a monopoly on the market and Adobe has gotten away with charging hundreds or even thousands of dollars per computer for flash development.  It's about time somebody stepped up to challenge Flash, even if it is Microsoft.

The demo looks pretty good, though I think you guys still have a long way to go to get the same amount of information presented as the regular NewEgg website.  Certainly there is a lot of potential there, as long as NewEgg doesn't fall into the trap of many other sites where they sacrifice efficiency and useability for eye-candy.   I think Silverlight could be very useful to NewEgg, if used well.

    Onboard RAID vs. 3Ware RAID

I never recommend people run RAID-5 with onboard chipsets.

Re: Check out Newegg's Silverlight Demo

Indeed. For me there are some things which I don't care much for eye candy. Personally, I think the site the way it is now is good enough.

Re: Check out Newegg's Silverlight Demo

In school I discovered that Flash is intrusive because it places a cache folder on the users PC that allows the company to view all kinds of information about their browsing and even purchasing habits. If the default settings are left on that cache folder (1000MB) then the company can potentially gather quite a bit of information about the user.

Does Silverlight work the same way, placing a cache folder on the users PC, or do they have a different approach not so intrusive?

Re: Check out Newegg's Silverlight Demo

Cool, yes. But I don't know how practical it is. It seems kind of cumbersome. I'd probably end up using the old interface.

Re: Check out Newegg's Silverlight Demo

This would be so cool if every sginle power search option in the power search had a slider like that. Though I would say try to give this a more classic neweggy feel, yea its new, but were all used to one way.

    Ex: searching for PSU's

powersearch has predefined wattage selections, A sliverlight deal has a slider and you can select wattage number for number.

Keep pushing this kind of stuff to live.

    Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHZ Quad OC to 3.33GHZ
    Nvidia GeForce 285 GTX 1GB
    6GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3
    2X WD Black SATA 500GB RAID 0
    Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4P
    Corsair TX850W PSU
    Antec 900 Steel Case
    LG DVD+RW w LightScribe

Re: Check out Newegg's Silverlight Demo

    Very cool concept.

As a both a silverlight and ecommerce developer I will be paying close attention to  how you guys shape this new feature.

The search and product animation works well.  I'd like to see how you guys will handle the interface once all the extra details from the main website are in place.    I definitely do alot of searching using the features filters and I usually read through several of the customer reviews before buying a product not just the egg rating alone.

One improvement I would like to see in New Egg is that I have often searched for a product I did not know how to spell or only had a partial description of.  Google will find a match but New egg will not.   I think you guys should consider even defaulting to a google search within your domain if no matches can be found by the newegg search. This wouldn't take much development time to add to the site.   http://www.google.com/coop/cse/
