Is there any performance benefit to pairing a ATI video card with an AMD cpu or Nvidia still the way to go?

Nope. Intel is the way to go. NVIDIA and ATI might perform differently depending on game and resolution being played at.

Hmm but I wasn't asking about intel.  I understand that different settings in games or software make a difference in performance.  I don't understand how your post applies to the question.

Reworded: There is no performance benefit by using ATI & AMD. FYI, Intel offers better performance these days. NVIDIA & ATI cards will perform differently depending on the game....therefore there no definite company to go with. 

If comparing ATI + AMD and NVIDIA + AMD.....the game performance will be strictly defendant on the video card and how a particular video card performs in a certain game.

In short, don't worry about pairing. Look at benchmarks for games and decide on which manufacturer is best to go with.

I agree that you shouldn't worry about pairing much. However, I have noticed that nVidia chipsets work better with nVidia graphics cards and ATI chipsets work better with ATI cards.. If nothing else, it's because the ATI chipsets such as the SB600 support crossfire and the nvidia chipsets support nvidia SLI..  

CPU seems to me to be quite irrelevant to the chipset and video card choice...

 

Oh really? Nvidia chipsets work better with Nvidia graphics cards? just because it supports SLI? so what if Intel's chipsets with Nvidia or /and  AMD/ATI  crossfire support? I don't think it will make much difference.  after the memory controller was integrated into CPU, the NB has less and less work to do. :-)

I was just stating a fact that most AMD chipsets don't support nvidia SLI and most nvidia chipsets don't support AMD crossfire..

Intel has nothing to do with this thread.. Respectfully, thread is about pairing with an AMD CPU, and AFAIK, there are no Intel chipsets that pair with an AMD CPU.

I haven't used crossfire, but I have pretty much always used AMD processors and Nvidia graphics cards.  Never thought twice about it.  Haven't seen any issues.

I prefer to use AMD processors, chipsets and graphics purely because it makes sense for me.  AMD has consistently had a price/performance advantage on Intel and my personal experience has been better with ATI now part of AMD GPU's and AMD chipsets.  I don't do MMOG so I really have no use for sli or crossfire or even an i7 quad core extreme.  Nvidea has had some quality control problems with their 8000/9000 series GPU's, although they claim they are fixed.

nope not right now but some chipsets are faster then others. What the other poster was saying about intel was that if you get a intel cpu it will be faster them the same priced amd cpu. but if you are a fan of amd them stay with amd and ati.
