New developements on an old issue. I've been having problems with svchost.exe hanging on startup with a few of the machines I take care of. It turned out that it was the Windows Automatic Update service. The fix is described in MS Article ID 931852. Now after further experience it turns out that Symantecs Antivirus suite is responsible for hosing Windows Automatic Update service. This does not suprise me. I have been having problems with Symantecs products since 1997 with NT 4.0. If I had my way there would not be any of Symantecs software on the computers I take care of. If Peter Norton new what Symantec was going to do with his software I'm sure he would never have sold it to them!
