Hello all.
I am hoping to find someone with a lot of know-how to help me. I am new to computers and have an old Compaq Presario that I am trying to upgrade a little. I build photo albums, calendars etc. Have upgraded from 1gb memory to 2gb and added MS Office 2007. Was working good but suddenly I lost some of the pictures I had on memory waiting to be written to disc. Also seem to have lost a big bit of open memory even with the extra 1gb that I added. I am down to 52% open memory where I was at 78%. Now I am lost. Do I get an external drive that is media oriented? Do I add an internal hard drive that is bigger or just ditch the whole thing and start over??????
What?
If I read correctly, you can't recover something ost in RAM, but if it's in hard drive, you might find it
Not able to post pic., but in descriptive nouns. Pulled up the file folder and where there were once thumbnails of all photos in the folders there were only outlines with a generic pic like a boat or sail or something like that much smaller than the outline. When I tapped on the thumbnail the "can't find profile" blurb came up. When I held the cursor over the generic pic it gave me a JPG with a memory in bytes under i.e. jpg214mb or somesuch.
I still have the pics on a memory chip, so not all is a loss, all but the time I took to separate the pics into catagories and into files. Just did not want it to keep happening.
I run a 32 bit, 2700 with 2GB of memory(recently upgraded from only 1GB(2x1GB crucial memory chips), recently upgraded from MS Office 2003 to 2007, which seems to be taking up an inordinate amount of memory as even with the added 1GB of memory I was knocked down to 52% free space (even after removing all files that were still viable and transferring them to disc) where I was at 78 + or - of free space before. Is Office 2007 too complicate for my system or are the newly added memory chips not work with my OS?
Welcome to EggXpert!!
Probably can't save the files, sorry, have to re-do.
New memory................................. did you go into the BIOS and set the proper voltages and timings for the new memory?
I would run a quick test on your memory with memtest86 to ensure its operation.
Memtest86+ Bootable CD-ROM ISO - 2.01
5/16/08
Memtest86+ For USB Key (Pure DOS) - 2.01
Memtest86+ Bootable 1.44 FDD Image - 2.01

As far as much memory as your using ...................... does it ever tell you that it is low on memory?
Nothing letting me know mem is low as of yet. Just the files going bye-bye. Already started over and thought of buying an external media drive to download the pics etc to.
How do you go into BIOS and set the timing?
Have you ever rebuilt a computer? Do you have any suggestions on redoing a Compaq Presario for about 4-8mb? Will no doubt need a new MB but what is best? and will I be able to use most of what I have in this one with just a few additions?
You would most likely end up replacing most of that old PC, including windows.
You can post in System Builds with the full specs of your current PC and your budget. many will help.
I was thinking you might also wanna check your CPU fan and heatsink, make sure it is clean and dust free, maybe its starting to overheat under full load.
Thank you!! Will try the dusting and the posting.
Will definately be building my own in the future. Have caught the bug. Especially after reading some of the forums.
Fun, fun, fun
Now for cheking BIOS for compatability of mem. How do you do it?
I guess what ever it is I may not be having it all bad. Can still turn it on and it doesn't blow up.
