    How to change your 4870x2 fan speed

    here is a little guide for changing your 4870x2 fan speed.

    Please note you are doing this at your own risk.

    Way #1

    Make sure you have "show hidden folders enabled.

    first go into catalyst and make a new profile. Up at the top where it says profile, then the little arrow over and name it whatever you want. After creating it leave catalyst.

    Then do this.

    if running vista
    C:\users\yourusername\Appdata\Local\ATI\ACE\Profiles\profileyoujustmade

    right click and edit that file.

    Got the bottom and you will see this text

          <Feature name="FanSpeedProtocol_1">
            <Property name="FanSpeedProtocolProperty" value="Percent" />
          </Feature>
          <Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_1">
            <Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Automatic" />
          </Feature>
          <Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_1">
            <Property name="Want" value="1376" />
          </Feature>
          <Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_1">
            <Property name="Want" value="27" />

    Change Automatic to manual and then change the 27 to whatever you want. i perfer 65

    he is what it looks like when done

          <Feature name="FanSpeedProtocol_1">
            <Property name="FanSpeedProtocolProperty" value="Percent" />
          </Feature>
          <Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_1">
            <Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Manual" />
          </Feature>
          <Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_1">
            <Property name="Want" value="1376" />
          </Feature>
          <Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_1">
            <Property name="Want" value="65" />

    On XP the only difference is how you find the profile.

    should be

    c:\document and setting\yourname\application data\ATI\ACE\profile

    after you do this, re-open catalyst and run that profile, some say you have to do it everytime. For me, i have only had to do it once and it does it on boot up

    Re: How to change your 4870x2 fan speed

    Have you experienced the high temps yourself? I'm planning on getting one, and haven't heard of the fan prob, yet. See you got 8800GTXs, so curious if this is a helper FYI, or based on personal experience? The fan fix is the same as that we had to use for the 4850s(& 4870s) and is listed in here a few times. But all the help is certainly welcomed.

    Just wanted to know about the 4870X2 heat issue, man, you'd thought they would have upped the fan speed, or efficiency of said fan, knowing this stuff in advance. oh well.

    Oh yeah, minor point, but when choosing the profile and ok'ing it, people need to also unlock overdrive. I had a few email me, saying the fix wouldnt work, and found they hadn't unlocked OD. (You can create a profile w/ it locked, and people may miss this).

    Re: How to change your 4870x2 fan speed

    well with the fan at 27% you will expect about 70-80 degrees Celsius. This will really do a number on the card, and since i have 2 that amount of heat is not acceptable until i get waterblocks.

    I would think they would fix the low fan percentage especially with this card wow haha. yes i forgot to say that you need to have OD unlocked. Always forget that haha.

    So far the card is amazing, just have to turn fans up a bit higher since the heat this thing can put out is crazy. Could be used as a spare heater.

    Also i havent updated my specs but i have a gigabyte x48, 4gb gskill/ocz mix @ 1200mhz, 2 sapphire 4870x2's and 1.5tb  HDD space. Ill update it soon. at work now and the boss isnt here :)

    oh, OK! Yeah, geez, yah know, ATI gets it right, you'd think they'd be on top of this stuff to sorta stay the king for a bit. IMO letting these little inefficiencies go, and not addressing them ipriori is inexcusable.

    2 x HD4870X2 !!!???? That's nutz. What you using for a PSU?

    LOL. Considering they use 270W each, hahaha. 'nuff said. 540W for video cards alone. Might as well make these cards with their own external power supplies.

    Re: How to change your 4870x2 fan speed

    Well I'm glad I found this topic :).

     Had my 4850 fan speeds on default, and didn't realize that it was actually idling at 78C, after bumping up the fan speed to 50%, the effect was instant, my GPU temp began dropping immedietely, (It took 2 minutes to drop 26C) and currently it's now idling at 45C. Thanks for the help :).
