How to keep XP from getting slower?

Hello, I have a question here

Usually Windows XP goes fast after system installation, but gets slower and slower later on, and more and more space is missing meanwhile. To delete some temporary files could empty some space, but I don't understand why the space still gets smaller since I haven't set up any big files or software on my PC.

My question is:"do you know how to keep XP from getting slower?" My friend says it is just the way XP is. But I guess you guys may know how to help XP lose weight. Thanks!

It takes a little diligence to keep it running well over time.  I use TuneUp 2008 and jv16 to clean the registry of invalid entries etc. and to compact it.  CCleaner is a great program to clean up the hard drive of unneeded files, as is TuneUp 2008.  I use Ultimate Defrag to defragment the hard drive at least once a week.  I also place the paging file first followed by the windows directory so they reside on the fastest part of the drive platters.  Once a week I use every one of these programs and the last one I use is Ultimate Defrag.  Another good habit to get into is to not install programs you don't plan to use or install programs for fun and then uninstall them.  IMO, this leaves behind lots of garbage and mucks up the MFT area of the hard drive.  One of the biggest reasons Windows slows down over time is the MFT area gets loaded with more and more stuff.  It can get fragmented and this slows down the overall system as a result.  Especially if you install and then uninstall a lot of different programs.  There are programs that claim to defragment it but I don't know if they really help that much.

Re: How to keep XP from getting slower?

There are several things that cause XP to slow down and the biggest problem is M$'s background running programs and then there is you keeping the system clean and organized. the first issue is deciding which programs you don't need 1. indexing if you do not search your computer for files or program locations disable this by going to C: properties and unselecting this at the bottom of the page 2. compressing the HDD old and seldom used files same location 3. M$ Messenger if you don't use it disable it 4. outlook express don't use it get rid of it 5. online services delete it 6. other programs that you have loaded and don't use remove them. Now keeping it clean and organized, this consists of 3-4 steps 1. defragging your HDD there are several good ones out there but those that offer opitmization of your HDD ( putting the directories and files that are used most often first on your HDD) are the better ones and IOBIT has a very good 1 thats free. 2. cleanning out your HDD, internet and registry those programs that have been deleted sometimes leave traces and registry entries on your computer and when you surf the internet you pickup cookies and spyware that keep track of where you go and what you do on the internet again several good freebees out there IOBIT and Glary's utilities. 3. doing these things manuelly versus setting the autmotatic options, if you can not remember to do this yourself set the automatics to do it for you which again slows down your XP. 4. last but not least run your tool bar scanner to make sure none of the other stuff has deleted something you need, this will fix those problems and prevent future ones. Here are the links to the freebees.
