Help finding a PCI card that supports 1680 x 1050

I have a Dimension 2400 (about 4 years old) with 2GB of RAM. Purchased a 22 inch LCD monitor with 1680 x 1050 native resolution. Integrated intel video card does not support this resolution (closest resolutions supported are 1600 x 900 or 1600 x 1200 - neither looks good). Drivers are up to date so I guess I need a PCI card but don't know which one will support this native resolution. I don't want to spend a lot; otherwise I might as well get a new computer. Anybody know of an inexpensive fix (PCI card) to this problem?

If you're not into gaming and don't have any AGP slots available, then this FX5200 will do the trick.

Re: Help finding a PCI card that supports 1680 x 1050

Correct. I don't use this computer for gaming and it does not have AGP slots. Thanks for the suggestion (FX5200); however, I did check this PCI card out and the manufacturer does not list 1680 x 1050 as a supported resolution.

    Supported resolutions:

Thank you as well Tracer76 for your suggestions. I will check these out and see if the manufacturer lists 1680 x 1050 as a supported resolution. Unfortunately, not all manufacturers list supported resolutions only the max resolution supported. I don't know a lot about computers, but I'm quickly getting an education on video cards. Thanks again.

Not a problem some may not support that 1680 X 1050 res do to PCI being old technology.

    NVIDIA driver allows custom resolutions

And coincidentially, the guide shows how to do it on an FX5200 card.

Re: Help finding a PCI card that supports 1680 x 1050

Thanks SergeiV. I checked out the link. Although it does not say that it will accept 1680 x 1050, I would be surprised if it didn't. You're alright SergeiV! Thanks again!

Re: Help finding a PCI card that supports 1680 x 1050

One other question SergeiV - You referred me to the FX5200 that is made by Chaintech (the chipset manufacturer being NVIDIA). Is it safe to assume that this video card will allow custom resolutions because the chipset manufacturer is NVIDIA, or do I have to purchase the NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 specifically? Just want to make sure I purchase the correct card.

Re: Help finding a PCI card that supports 1680 x 1050

Yes, because after all you'll be going to NVIDIA's website for drivers. Chaintek website will only be of use to you for warranty and troubleshooting.

Great! So unless a better choice comes along, I'll get the Chaintech card and go from there! Thanks again SergeiV!

Re: Help finding a PCI card that supports 1680 x 1050

Just wanted to give you guys an update - the FX5200 (256mb) works great and was easy to install. After updating the latest NVIDIA driver, the native resolution was already available for my 22 inch LCD (1680 x 1050). Thanks again! -
