    9800 GX2 vs GTX 260

Just sold my 8800 GTS 640 on ebay, and I'm going to be upgrading to one of these two cards. Seeing as how they're both under $300, which one is the better choice? From my understanding, GX2 provides better framerates, but the 'micro stuttering' I've been hearing about makes games feel choppier than they would on the 260. Suggestions? Oh, and I never plan on doing SLI, just want a single card that will last me about a year, or until I use the EVGA step-up program to upgrade.

    Thanks

    Re: 9800 GX2 vs GTX 260

If your never going to sli, then the 9800gx2 is by far your best option.. I dont know if your just preference on nvidia which is cool its a good company, but if you take a look at ati they just release there 4870x2... Still has only beta driver but even now its kicking a**... But given your choices 9800gx2 by far its not even really a match fps or benchmark wise... Out of the 9800gx2 you'll be getting better than gtx280 performance.

    Re: 9800 GX2 vs GTX 260

Awesome, that's the first response I've gotten that sounds straight forward and confident. Here's another question for ya: I'm using this power supply, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341002. Will that be enough to power the GX2? I know it has two 6-pin connections, but what about the 8-pin? Does the EVGA model come with some type of adapter?

EDIT: I would love to go for the 4870 X2, but I'm on a budget of 300 or less.

    Re: 9800 GX2 vs GTX 260

I think it should be more than able to run the video card.. You could prob use two of the four pin to stick in the 8 pin connection.. Also I believe it might come with an adapter, if it doesnt you could pick on up for a dollar or two at your local computer store.

I was looking at that same card but reading the reviews it looks like it doesnt come with the 8-pin adapter so make sure you pick one up when you buy it.  The 9800GX2 is an amazing card though.  I would jump on it while you have the chance.

    Re: 9800 GX2 vs GTX 260

IMO, go with 9800GX2, it will smoke GTX 260 almost in every aspects.  or you can go directly to GTX 280 like this $375 after $75 mail in rebate. it has 6 pin or 8 pin power connector.

    9800GX2 or GTX 280,Never GTX 260 lol

    Re: GTX 260 or 9800GX2??

If all you care about is maximum framerates get the 9800GX2.  I hope you have a decent enough power supply to support it and you like micro-stuttering and trying to get drivers to work with SLI.  If you care about smoother gameplay and really don't care about maximum framerates, get the GTX260.

thanks guys. what exactly is micro stuttering? and does it only occur with SLI setups? and i believe my PSU is good enough for either of those cards.

If you like playing games, I would suggest 9800gx2. The game effect will be obviously

better than using gtx260. If you don’t want to set up sli, then a single 9800gx2 will be

    perfect.

You do realize that the 9800GX2 IS SLI?  You have to set it up just like an SLI setup except that you have one physical card except two.  All the headaches with SLI come along with it.
