*Help* A New Hard Drive for the Apple G5 PowerPC

Hello. I have an Apple G5 PowerPC, running a 250 GB Maxtor 6B250S0 ATA Hard Drive in the "A" (upper) Bay. I want to purchase another 250 GB Hard Drive from Newegg.com, but because the Maxtor 6B250S0 model is unavailable, I don't know which other Maxtor drive would be appropriate. I want to add a Hard Drive to the "B" (lower) Bay. I have never installed an internal Hard Drive before, so I'm not certain what exact specifications are needed to successfully upgrade my computer.

Are there compatibility issues that I should be aware of?

Which hard drive do you recommend?

Is this a good one?: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822144456

Thank you for your help and support. I will look forward to hearing back from some of you experienced, knowledgeable experts on eggxpert!

Ok well from looking it up its a SATA 1.5. Now do you have an extra SATA port on the mother board and extra SATA power connection as well?

Yes, it is a Serial-ATA Hard Drive, and yes, I do have an extra port on the mother board. I'm not sure about the power connection. How do I detect it? I'm sure if I have an extra port, I have an extra connection. Maybe not. What do you think?

Re: *Help* A New Hard Drive for the Apple G5 PowerPC

Well thats good then that you have a extra port on the motherboard.

For what the power connection will look like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA and scroll down to the pic on the left. if you have one coming from the PSU then you are ok. If not there are molex connections as well

Also sense this is a OEM drive it will not come with the cables like the retail ones do so

    Rosewill RCW-204 20" /SATA external data Cable 7Pin Female to 7Pin Female /Red - Retail $2.99   data cable

Link Depot UV Power Cord into SATA Power Cable Model POW-UV-SATA - Retail   1.99 power cable if needed.

Thank you for your helpful advice! Are you referring to the Maxtor Drive in the link I posted? Is there a different, maybe better, drive you can suggest?

Re: *Help* A New Hard Drive for the Apple G5 PowerPC

Not a problem at all gald to help out.

Yes I was refereeing to the link that you posted its a OEM and not a retail drive. With OEM you will not get the cables or the CD and manual that comes with retail. and its not a big deal as long as you know what cables to get or might need and they are cheap now to purchase to day. links above for the cables are $5.

Its a good drive you just have to by the cables is all.

Re: *Help* A New Hard Drive for the Apple G5 PowerPC

thanks again. I will make sure to buy the data cable and power connector. You've been a great help! Oh, one last thing. I've heard people say that Western Digital is a better brand than Maxtor. Is this true? Should I opt for a WD or stick with the Maxtor (b/c this is the original brand Apple used)?

Re: *Help* A New Hard Drive for the Apple G5 PowerPC

Not a problem at all. I would sick with Maxtor at this point just in case the MAC does not like WD. Yes WD has come a long way and is a great brand as well but at this point Maxtor is the way to go when dealing with a MAC.
