    Repairing Noisy VGA fan

Thought I would pass along a little trick I learned while working as a journeyman electrician many moons ago.

While on a service call in the Mojave desert badlands in Southern California I encountered a "frozen" HVAC blower motor. Being in the middle of nowhere and a nice cool 115 degree day, I needed to get this AC going before I had to call 911and report my customer had just suffered a heat stroke! It was then I recalled a trick I'd learned from a fellow I had worked with many, many years ago facing a similar situation.

The fellow I was working with back then reached into his tool box, pulled out a 6" awl and punched a small hole in the end bearing cover of the 1/2 hp air conditioning blower motor. Into that hole he sprayed a liberal amount of WD-40 and waited about 15 minutes for it to work it's "magic." We returned and gave the frozen shaft a spin of the squirrel cage and VOILA, motor was frozen no longer. A week later I returned and replaced that motor but it was still humming along as though nothing were wrong with it. It was a "sealed sleeve bearing" motor, by the way.

The above is all leading up to my reason for this post. My X1650 video card's fan began making squealing noises so I figured why not use a little "yankee ingenuity" on it as I did on the HVAC blower motor. I vaccinate my own dogs and happened to have a hypodermic syringe lying around from a previous vaccination. The fan on the X1650 card has a stick on label that covers the end bearing, so I took the card out of the AGP slot, and carefully poked a small hole in the center of that label with a hat pin.I had a small amount of pure mineral oil (3 in 1 would do) on hand, so I drew a very small amount into the syringe and "injected" about 2 drops into that noisy bearing - NO MORE SQUEALING! I did that procedure going on 6 month ago and still not a sound from that once noisy fan.

I'm not advocating doing this instead of replacing a noisy fan but it sure solved the problem on that "sleeve" bearing fan of the Radeon X1650 vid.card. I'm as sure as I'm writing this that if left alone and allowed to squeal it would have surely frozen and possibly severly damaged the card.

Anyhoo, if any of you would like to try this little trick it will work on any bearing that you can access to oil but remember, a little goes a long way - less is more.
