When is a HP DV1000 not a DV1000? When it's "really" a DV1600.
The front of the laptop and the back holographic label say "DV1000", so I downloaded the repair manual from HP and found the replacement fan part number in the manual, which agreed with the part number for a DV1000 on the HP website parts store. So, I ordered that replacement fan from a guy on eBay for a reasonable price. He supplied the part within a couple of weeks, no problem.
I then went to replace the fan, dutifully following the instructions in the DV1000 repair manual. (My lord, you gotta strip the whole laptop to get to the fan!) Everything was going along swimmingly until the last step: "Remove the heat sink from the fan." Say what? This heat sink and fan are one assembly. Ain't no way they're coming apart, and the new fan in one hand doesn't look like the old fan in the other.
So I went back to the HP website to confirm that I had the correct part. This time I put in the p/n for the laptop instead of just "DV1000" and lo and behold, that p/n refers to a DV1600 laptop and not a DV1000. I downloaded the DV1600 repair manual, and see my fan/heat sink assembly quite clearly, with a completely different part number.
I ordered the fan/heat sink directly fro HP this time. This weekend I'll see if I can put it all back together without too many extra pieces. By gawd, I'm gonna make this thing work... Wish me luck.
