    420W power supply-Upgrading computer

I currently have a 420W power supply.   I am looking to upgrade to a E8500 and a High End Geforce or ATI video card (probably won't be SLI/crossfiring).   Do I need to upgrade my power supply?

    Thanks

What are the other components in the system? Mobo HD's Opticals Case Fans and such. If you are using a high end card I usually suggest 600w's min for that but a single rail Corsair 550w may do the trick or the Pc Power&Cooling Silencer 610w

like sparker said, it depends on all your other components, and what card you choose.  The e8500 is a fairly energy efficient chip.  If you're getting a 8800gt, which is also very efficient, and you have a standard build (1 case fan, 1 sata hdd, 1 dvd-rw, 2 sticks of ddr2 ram, and a average mobo)  a 420w psu would do fine.

8800gt is a great card. Its more efficient than a 8800 gts,and is also more powerful. This is due to its more advanced chip manufacturing. (65nm)

I just thought of this.   I gotta make sure that the connectors are good.  Don't the newer graphics card have a different power connector than the older ATI 9800PRO series graphics.

yes, they do.  Newer graphics cards use the 6-pin PCI-E power connectors, however, many cards do come with adapters, so you can use two standard molex connectors instead.

Also, do you have a PCI-E slot?  I think that the 9800Pro is an AGP slot card.  The vast majority of new graphics cards are made for PCI-E slots.

If you don't have a PCI-E slot, you can get a fairly new graphics card for AGP, the ATI Radeon 3850 video card comes in an AGP version.  Also, the 3850 is very power efficient(under 100watts at max load), so, provided you have a good quality power supply, 420watts should be enough.

What brand is your power supply?  Is it ATX 2? What is the max 12v power(either amps or watts) listed on the label?

    EmP:

Unfortunately, that wattage calculator is really inaccurate.  I put in the specs for a 400watt computer in, and it came up with 577watts.  I put in the specs for a 450-500watt computer, and it came up with 786watts.

It's really easy to calculate the wattage requirements yourself, and far more accurate.

A good way to narrow down the power supplies you're looking at, or evaluate the quality of an older power supply, is to take a look at the eggxpert tiered power supply list.  Check it to see where your current power supply is.

    ^^^^ Yea, and make sure its a PCI-e x16, not a PCI-e x1 slot.

if you still need a new power supply, the OCZ StealthXStream 600watt power supply just went on sale for $39 at newegg w/ free shipping(use coupon code EMCAJAFBE).  That is an amazing deal, and, if you still need a power supply, you should get that right away, before the sale expires.  That is the lowest price I've ever seen for that power supply.  Yes
