    Wireless setup question

I'm exploring this topic to see if it's even feasible.  Here's the scenario.

DSL comes into my house through a phone line, where it goes through a wireless router.  About 300 feet away from my home is my Bed & Breakfast, where I'd like to have wireless internet access.  I can't run phone or ethernet cable to the B&B.  Is there any way of getting wireless in there?  If I place an AP in the part of my house closest to the B&B will the signal reach?

Anyone have any other ideas or know of products that would help me do this?

Found this while waiting on a reply.  Do you think it would work?

    Re: Wireless setup question

300 ft? You're lucky to get 50-100 feet (no walls in between) out of a traditional 802.11 router.

You might get lucky if you put a high-gain antenna (think bullhorn like device) on both ends, but even then expect a weak signal.

    No way 300ft will work.

    Re: Wireless setup question

To do what you're trying to do you would need two industrial grade wireless antennae.  You would need to mount one on the outside of each building, and point them directly at each other.

You would probably need something similar to this:
    http://www.radiolabs.com/products/antennas/2.4gig/18eleyagi.php?PHPSESSID=abb901c98f33538a64bb885ea8c7f464

But you need more than just the antenna.  You need an amplifier for each:

After getting the antennae, the 2 amps, the cables, the mounting hardware, and the access points you're looking at an over $1,000 investment.  It should work, but it'll cost ya.

If you're gonna do a crazy setup like this, then you must encrypt the network with strong encryption.  If you're beaming a signal that strong, others will be able to pick it up.  You must encrypt.

    Best of luck to you.

Agreed.  With the equipment specified (and omni-directional antennae,) your w/network plundstedt will not likely function.

a solution similar to madden64's will be required.  2 directional anetnnae one at each building will be needed to connect them.  Note also that Dish-types will perform better than the listed yagi.  at only 300ft there should be no need for amping.

[this is the minimum equipment needed just to CONNECT the 2 bldgs together.  If you wish to have full wireless coverage of your B & B, then additional wireless APs (preferably as a mesh network,) will also be needed.  You may want to think about cincyguy's suggestion and have the bldg wired instead.]

    Re: Wireless setup question

Or you could run a crossover Ethernet cable from one WiFi router to another WiFi router up at your bed and breakfast, though I would probably think about CAT6 and maybe running through a buried pipe to protect the wiring.  300 feet... you will have to see what the specs are, they may be 100 feet between routers, I cannot remember.  Cat6 should help that however.  Keep in mind your ISP, though he only sees your current router as a single computer, may balk if your bandwidth utilization exceeds whatever the limit is on your EULA.  You would then be forced to get a business account.

    Freedom's the Answer.
