I just finished my new build. I booted it up, went to bios and checked the temperatures and noticed the temperature on the CPU was 103C.. Thats WAAY too hot.. I don't understand why its like that, everything else is nice and cool. The HSF fan is working and spinning, so is the other fans. So I dont know whats going on, but after a awhile the computer will shut down by itself, i'm guessing because its getting too hot?

 

 If anyones got an ideas, please let me know, because I dont know if I can install windows if its that hot..

I just checked it, it starts at 70c then slowly skyrockets up.. Usually in 1 or 2 incriments.

Hi Vilex, did you apply thermal compound between the CPU and its cooler fan? Some fan comes with the compound preaplied, others don't.

No, I didn't. Alot of people told me it would be fine stock, and that it wouldn't get bad unless I overclocked. Alot of people said they overclocked it to 3.5ghz fine on air with it only reaching high 50's and low 60's I think it was.

 It didn't come with any, but.. If I cant get the heat to go down, i'll have to get some AS5 and possibly a better HSF?

Well, as far as I know, if you run it without any thermal compound at all, it can damage the CPU. A very expensive one by the way.

So you think that should keep it overheating too much? Should I get a better HSF fan too? I think the Artic cool freezer pro 7, would keep that sucker cool enough haha.

 But still, I don't see why the CPU would get THAT hot when everything is stock..?

Basically the job of the heatsink and fan is to take heat away from the CPU. This is done by the direct contact of the heatsink with the surface of the CPU. Looking at both metal surfaces they look smooth clean, however, they aren't perfect, the metal has tiny invisible to the eye, cracks, filled with air,  which don't allowed the heatsink to get close enough to do its job. The thermal compound fills those cracks, and kind of bond CPU and heatsink together, helping the HSF to transfer heat off the processor.

About replacing the HSF, it would be a good idea, the ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro has pretty good reviews.
