    Re: Installing new HDD HELP!

Many drive makers have a utility you can download that will copy your old drive to the new one.

Or you can buy a Ghost program to copy it over with.

I'm not sure if this one will work or not, but you might be able to buy an external drive enclosure for the old drive, and load it over a USB port.

    Re: Installing new HDD HELP!

Thats probably because your usb drive wasn't big enough, XP is over 3GB generally depending on what you install, and if your talking about a flash drive most of them are formatted in FAT file system which doesn't let larger files be copied. I do not know of any free ghosting software most of it will cost you, but its generally cheaper than a new license and disk of xp.

Yea, I was talking about a USB External hard drive, you might be able to format your flash drive to NTFS but it is difficult, you might find how on google though.

I lost my links to free drive copy programs, you can google those too., just look for reviews on them to make sure they work ok.

    Re: Installing new HDD HELP!

well it was acctually a seagate free agent 750GB, i fixed the problem by buying an external enclosure and placing the new HDD on the laptop and the one with XP on the external enclosure, setup detected the USB drive with the old 60GB HDD and allowed me to install XP pro on the 250GB HDD.

    Thanks!

    Re: Installing new HDD HELP!

If you make a partition on the new drive for 60GB and copy that over you won't have to worry about loosing your old drive, and you could reformat it and use it as a portable drive.

Glad it worked out for you.
