Sharing Files from XP to Vista

So I have the basic home network set up on all my machines at home with XP.  I have some stuff on my computer, like music and movies, that I share across the network.  However, my sister came home from college this summer and her machine has Vista.  The only thing I was able to get her to see on the network was whatever I uploaded into Windows Media Player, and even then she cant get access to everything.  She cant see my shared folders.

My question is how do I get a Vista machine to recognize shared folders from XP?  I tried going into her network settings, but all it sees is whatever I am sharing in WMP 11.

    Thanks

Re: Sharing Files from XP to Vista

I have not had to deal with this personally as I do not have Vista but I have helped a friend.

Best way we could figure out is to use the "Network ID" button that launches a wizard and detects the network.

In the wizard choose "this computer is for home use and not part of a business network", make sure file sharing is on...then restart. It should join the WORKGROUP domain.

Now go to the XP machine and change the domain to WORKGROUP, and restart.

It worked after that. Hope that help you

    That's what she said...

Re: Sharing Files from XP to Vista

That is a good article. I have Windows Vista sharing files with XP. You can try the following

Join your sister's computer to your workgroup

Enable network discovery and file sharing on her computer in Network Sharing.

Under her firewall, check to see if file and print sharing is an exception.

I don’t remember having too much trouble as long as you are in the same workgroup. I hope this helps
