Will not reboot with 4 gigs memory/will with 2 gig

    See sys. spec in sig.

New build about two weeks ago.  No problems.

Decided to up cpu voltage control. Flushed  Set it at 1.900v (had a senior moment).  Nominal cpu voltage is 1.5- 1.2 v.  Brought up the gray/black screen.

Got power back up.  I could not get it to reboot.  All other hardware/fans/leds working.  I took out one memory stick and it rebooted.   Tried to reboot again with both memory sticks and no reboot.  Pulled one out and system rebooted.

System will reboot with either memory stick alone and in any dimm socket.  System will not reboot with both memory sticks in a1&a2 socket or a3&a4 socket.  Gigabyte says to install 2 sticks in a1&a2 sockets.

Latest drivers and bios in place.

System will run perfect with either memory stick by itself.

I have set bios to auto....no reboot with 2 memory sticks installed

I have manually set bios to previous settings which ran fine on Prime 95 test....no reboot with 2 memory sticks installed

I have manually set bios to normal settings (same as auto) and under clocked cpu to  2.0mhz...no reboot with 2 memory sticks installed

I have not run Memtest86.  Out of discs.  Going to the store tomorrow.

Would be nice to be back to running system with 4 gigs instead of 2 gigs.

Thanks for trying to help me out.

What type of motherboard do you have? Does it support more than 2 gigs of memory?

I help people while my hard drive formats :)

Re: Will not reboot with 4 gigs memory/will with 2 gig

AMD has the memory controller inside the CPU, I hope it was not damaged by the extreame voltage, but it is possible.

Try going into the bios and changing your memory timings (latencies) and make sure it is set to 2T instead of 1T for the command rate (think thats what its called, lol pretty early in the AM here, lol).                 that might be necassary since you reset the BIOS. (make sure memory voltages are set correctly as well).

Re: Will not reboot with 4 gigs memory/will with 2

This is info copied from PCWizard under: "chipset"....memory information.

CPU-Z memory window shows same information...unable to show CPU-Z photo for some reason

     Memory Information :
    Command Rate :    2 T
    Shared Type :    DDR2-SDRAM PC2-6700
    Frequency :    420 MHz
    DRAM/FSB Ratio :    CPU/5
    Supported Channels :    Dual  (128-bit)
    Activated Channels :    Single
    ECC Diagnostic :    No
CAS Latency (tCL) :    6 clocks
RAS to CAS (tRCD) :    6 clocks
RAS Precharge (tRP) :    6 clocks
Cycle Time (tRAS) :    18 clocks
Bank Cycle Time (tRC) :    25 clocks

Memory voltage rating is correct.  Bios reads: DDR2 1.8v   1.968v

I checked with a tech at OCZ and he said that although this memory was rated @ 2.1v it would drop back to be compatible with the 1.8v requirements for this motherboard.  Never had any problems until my mess up.  This OCZ memory is rated 2.1 v up to 2.9 v.

This is the same information I always was running with for 2 weeks before the "accident"

If anyone could help.. I'm having the same problem as well. Did mem test with no errors for both sticks of ram.

With both sticks installed, do they show up in bios?

Re: Will not reboot with 4 gigs memory/will with 2

I ran Memtest86  and no problems.  I ran Prime 95 for 1 hour with no warnings and no errors.  Had the cpu info readout on screen while running Prime 95 and there was no drop in cpu frequency.  Core temps #1 and #2 and hard drive temps were in line with previous tests.   CPU-Z was showing similar info before and after Prime 95 test.  North Bridge and South Bridge heatsinks temps were normal.

Since the ram and the cpu seem to be okay I decided to rma the motherboard.   I'll  let you know  next  week if it works.
