    ATT cellphone upgrades possible?

Greetings! I am a long time newegg customer .... I am looking to upgrade ATT phones on my existing account (I am upgrade eligible per ATT) and sign up for a 2-year extension on my family plan. I was told by a customer support guy that I could do this without issues.

    1. Can someone provide specific information on how to indicate that I am an existing ATT customer and I am only upgrading

    2. I went through the purchase process and ended up on a page that said "Continue" or "Cancel Order". It asked me to click on "I agree to the terms of the contract" - I had to click on "Cancel order" because it appeared that I was being asked to pay for activation on 4 phones (I was trying to upgrade 3 phones and add 1 phone to the plan, instead of making me pay for a single activation, it said I had to pay for activation of 4 phones).

Your help in this matter will be gratefully appreciated! Thank you.

    Re: ATT cellphone upgrades possible?

this is a newegg/online issue, not one with AT&T.  You'll need a newegg staffer to help you out on this one.

    Re: ATT cellphone upgrades possible?

Thanks for your input .... I wish NewEgg would CLEARLY document the ATT upgrade process for customers, spelling out these issues, i.e.

    1. Call ATT to verify upgrade eligibility
    2. You wont (or will) be responsible for activation, etc. etc.

When you go through their checkout process, they don't spell out these issues BEFORE one clicks on "I accept the contract".

Bottom line - the policy needs to be clearly documented so that there is no ambiguity about various charges, etc.

Update: Newegg seems to be charging activation fees (its an ATT requirement) on existing lines, which humbly makes no sense to me.

Here is my chat with Newegg, which helps:

Chat InformationPlease wait while we connect you to a Newegg representative.

Chat InformationThank you for contacting Newegg. My name is Stephen. How may I assist you today?

Dan: Hi! I have some ATT cell phone upgrade questions
    Stephen: No problem.
Dan: I want to upgrade 3 phones on a family plan and add 1 more line for a total of 4 (I am upgrade eligible per ATT)
Dan: Unfortunately, your ATT upgrade process is not clearly documented
Dan: When I tried to do this on newegg.com, it wants me to pay for activation fee for 4 lines
Dan: It took me to a "I accept" the contract, without clearly explaining what charges will be accrued or not
Stephen: Unfortunately, it is correct in that you will have to pay $18 per line for activation if you choose to upgrade your family plan through us. If this is a concern for you, you do have the option to contact AT&T directly for your upgrade. We apologize for the confusion.
Dan: hmmm .... why does one have to pay for activation if it is just an upgrade, I have never heard that one before?
Dan: I can understand if its a new line
Stephen: It is not just an upgrade, it is a 2 year extention to your current plan. That process includes activation per line that we cannot waive.
Dan: so is that Newegg specific?
    Stephen: Yes, that is correct.
Dan: oh ok, thanks for the info
Dan: So its just a premium not an activation charge from ATT - it should be marked as such, because it seems misleading
Stephen: It actually is an activation charge from AT&T and it is stated as an activation fee.
Dan: hmmm but you just said it was newegg specific? no?
Stephen: They are activation fees that are charged on our site. If you have found another site or claim AT&T can waive your activation fee, you may want to contact AT&T for more details.
Dan: ok, thanks for your help!
Stephen: Do you have any other questions, or is there anything else I can assist you with today?
    Dan: thats all ...thanks!!!

    Re: ATT cellphone upgrades possible?

yea, that's an upgrade fee, as I understand it.  I believe that if you're completely out-of-contract (not just upgrade-eligible) it is waived.  It is possible that AT&T doesn't waive those fees for purchases made through 3rd party retail channels  (non-att.com online purchases)

    Re: ATT cellphone upgrades possible?

Thanks for your response. I was about to upgrade today and decided to double check again with Newegg support via chat ... they threw a curve ball today.

According to newegg, if you upgrade your existing ATT plan, you will lose your rollover minutes. Also, if you add any new lines to the existing plan (which I was going to do), they would charge $250 (dont ask why). Furthermore, they also said that I would not be able to add new lines.

BOTTOM LINE: Very respectfully, Newegg CELL PHONE customer service, is simply CONFUSING & CLUELESS. I wish they would honestly publish this on their web, like Amazon, that simply does not allow upgrading or adding lines to family plans.

I wonder why this company is so lax in their cell phone sales practices, they dont seem to want to share the real story (honestly) with their customers. It is extremely frustrating (disappointing!) to get non-answers or different answers from their customer service people. This, coming from a loyal newegg customer for many many years Big Smile
