Vista 64 bit or Xp 32 bit, which is right for me?

Which would you choose in my situation?

I have vista 64 bit oem for my system, but the startup times are killing me, and 2 programs are incompatible with vista.

my parents business computer went out, and they had an old compaq 2000 xp professional disk with the full code.

I installed it last night on my 80gb. hard drive last night, and it actually works, it activates and it is legit.

I know 32 bit techincally doesnt see the 6gb. of ram and i know it uses it.

Xp is also losing support this month, so im not for sure about using it ok.

I could just put xp on my 500gb. hard drive and vista on my 80gb. and use xp for games and vista for performance tasks, or use just xp and use the vista later if it so happens to do something wrong, but i would rather take other peoples opinions, thanks for your help

i am used to vista right now, but i would still like to get back to xp, i would rather not dual boot, i would rather just have 1 OS, instead of 2 or 3

Well actually it can not see above 4GB  please see the following links for 32bit vs. 64 bit. as who can tell you want to do and whats best for you is only one person and that is you. we can only provide help and direction for end users. Personally I like 32bit because it is more stable then 64bit.

Well that all depends are you going to play DX10 games?

Or are you going to use it for every day use like internet email, Docs, things like that?

How much RAM do you have in your system?

And if it 4GB or less are you going to go above that?

Re: Vista 64 bit or Xp 32 bit, which is right for me?

Well then you have to stay with 64bit. You can not use 6GB or RAM in a 32bit OS. Unless you want to loose 2GB of RAM then you can install 32bit.

Re: Vista 64 bit or Xp 32 bit, which is right for me?

yea, i know all about that, i do not care if i lose 2gb. of ram, the 2gb. of ram is kind of faulty anyway at certain speeds.

but, would the switch be worth it? or am i wasting my time wanting to switch to xp?

Re: Vista 64 bit or Xp 32 bit, which is right for me?

Well XP is more stable then Vista 64 is. I run both Vista and XP but they both have to be 32bit for one simple reason APi and Driver support is much better. So if you do not mind loosing 2GB of memory then go to XP. Also XP take less memory to run.

Here is a example of my system

Vista 32bit will take 32% of my ram on boot.

XP will only take 15% on boot.

I use XP more so then Vista. not only that Windows 7 will be out next year.

Re: Vista 64 bit or Xp 32 bit, which is right for me?

thank you very much, the only bad thing is that i wasted 100 on vista 64 bit, BUT, if xp ever fails or if it gets outdated and some super new improvement comes out for vista, then i have it

Re: Vista 64 bit or Xp 32 bit, which is right for me?

I would not say that its a wast really when you can think of it as a backup copy of a OS that you may need later.

As for your 2GB of RAM that maybe faulty did you contact the company that makes it? And see if they will replace it. Some companies will do this.

Re: Vista 64 bit or Xp 32 bit, which is right for me?

As long as you have not yet activated Vista, I would pull 2gig of Ram out and run XP for now & put the Vista disk & the RAM aside until you are ready to move up. Down the road when you are ready, there will be greater compatibility with hardware & software for 64-bit, and you will already be that much ahead on your build.

Re: Vista 64 bit or Xp 32 bit, which is right for me?

He has activated vista. How ever sense it’s under his name he can uninstall and reinstall it several times. And that is a very good point as well there will be better compatibility with hardware for 64bit. That is a excellent point

Unless I'm missing something, I don't see a reason why you wouldn't be able to dual boot XP and vista so that you can use one for most applications and the other for the times when the primary one wouldn't work out.  I know you can DB both XP and vista, but I don't know if they both have to be the same instruction set or if you could do a 32 and 64 each being vista.

Vista 64-bit Ultimate has worked for me without any real issues since I installed SP1, prior to that I had programs that stopped responding but I have yet to run into applciation compatibility issues.

hey, buddy, there is no need to move back to xp. yes, yes, yes, everybody in this world knows that XP is better. but xp will be outdated and we have to face something new. yep, some guys are waiting for windows 7, but who will guarantee windows 7 will be better or the same as xp? go with vista and enjoy it, yep, incompatibility issue sucks, but that will be history.

Re: Vista 64 bit or Xp 32 bit, which is right for me?

I have both vista 64 bit and xp32 bit, and I see no reason to even use xp. why is your start up time so slow. Vista for me loads in maybe 20 seconds including the raid reconition. I personally find vista to be as stable and more responsive than xp and to be a better os. But that could be also me tweaking vista and only loading certain updates. I know sp1 did alot for vista.

Re: Vista 64 bit or Xp 32 bit, which is right for me?

I'd rather not bother such a change, and XP is gradually exiting from the stage, so Vista and even Windows 7 will follow the suit with better performance...well have to say, bugless software does not exist. The most we can get is an extremely stable version. So it's just a process to get well with Vista and Windows 7. XD

Re: Vista 64 bit or Xp 32 bit, which is right for me?

Personal idea, XP is much suitable for you. There will be few differences for XP, if it supports more than 4 GB memory. As you said, the vista is not very stable; the XP has more compatible drivers and software. I think you would not like to spend your most of time on fixing the problems when you're using it.
