There is probably an easy explanation, but I can't find it. I download files, but they never show on my computer. This is now happening on my home computer, (Vista ultimate), and my laptop, (Vista Premium).

Is this a common Vista problem?

I have tried to download WinMerge to De-Duplicate files on my computer. I DL'd it several times. Once to desktop, once to documents, and once to Downloads folder, and it says DL is complete, but the file never shows up. I also tried to DL "Still Alive" ringtone to my comp. Same thing.

On my laptop, "Vista Premium" I DL'd PC-Decrapifier because I had to restore the image, and same thing. I can't find where it went to, even though I tried Desktop, Documents, and Downloads.

Any ideas?

I DL'd FF of the "Run, "Save" Cancel" options, I chose "Run. After it DL'd, I clicked "Run" to install FF.

Nothing happened after that so I can't tell you more. Nothing tried to install. No errors...no nothing.

I then tried to "Save", to desktop, and it claimed it saved it, but it is a mystery as to where.

I did what someone else did to solve this problem, on a different forum. I created another admin account. I tried to DL WinMerge, and it DL'd perfectly, and then installed perfectly.

Now, I must admit I do tend to install/uninstall things regularly. But I don't go to wierd and naughty sites, or any where that could add wierd things to IE7. So how this happened is beyond me. What's worst is my laptop is doing the same thing, and it is a brand new install.

I am thinking Windows Updates!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for your help. The problem isn't solved, but I have found a work around. On my Ultimate anyways.

haha, that sounds kinda funny.

Have you typed in the filename in a search.  I hate using the search built into windows.  Give this a try:

1.  Hit start and locate the command prompt
2. Right click on it and choose run as administrator
3. type     cd\     and hit enter
4. type     attrib (filename including extension) /s    and hit enter
5. look to see if you can find the disappearing files

Example:

attrib song.mp3 /s      or
attrib file.exe /s

If the file name is 2 words do the first 6 characters without spaces and add a ~1 to the end and then a . and the extension.     My download.exe > mydown~1.exe

Another possibility is that an AV program is deleting it.

Hmmmmmm. AVG AV trial had expired. While I was in the control panel looking to remove internet toolbar, (which was reccommended by another site I was reading) I uninstalled AVG. I am now back on my original admin account and FF downloaded and showed up fine on my desktop.

I go see if same thing happens on my laptop. BRB.

AVG is c**p. Go with something like Kaspersky or ESET Smart Security. Grisoft's stuff used to be good but they just trashed it with the latest release.

AVG was the problem. I uninstalled it and PC-Decrapifier DL'd to my desktop, and installed flawlessly.

I have found AVG to be excellent. It was a god send when it was free. I can't say that I blame them for charging though. You can only work for free for so long. I have heard nothing but great things about Kaspersky too though.

oh, finally the problem solved. and it is an interesting problem. and i am going to give AVG a shot in the coming days. hope it will works fine. recently the Norton installed in my pc does not work very well.
