    80mm to 120mm fan adapter

Does Newegg carry any in stock? I found one but was out of stock.

You might have to get it from FrozenCPU or a similar site.

Looks like I will have to go else where if I want it.

If you really want to use 120mm fans I would suggest modding your case.  Simply use a 120mm pattern and drill the holes and use a dremel or jigsaw to cut the inner pattern out of the case.

Those adapters will murder the air flow that a 'normal' 120mm would provide.

Well not necessarily murder, but provided you have a 120mm fan with a strong motor (like one of the silverstone fans), you should still be able to push out adequate cfm, at the 80mm mark, it'll be coming through at a higher rate of speed. My guess would be that If you had a 100cfm 120mm fan, you'd be getting atleast 70cfm through the 80mm duct.

I'm not really looking for an increase in air flow as much as to get less noise. Like maybe mount on the back of a power supply or on a heatsink.

that shouldn't reduce noise at all if you are just exchanging 1 80mm fan for 1 120mm fan, its still 1 fan

if you want it quieter, just get a quieter fan, size doesn't make a difference

Larger fans can be spun at a lower RPM and create the same or more cfm while maintaining a lower dBa.

Re: 80mm to 120mm fan adapter

except wouldn't the extra airflow the 120 would provide at the same speed be negated by the fact its only blowing through 80mm holes? (I realize it should still push more then the 80mm, but it won't be as much as if it had its entire surface area open to blow through)

therefore, when spinning slower, it will be pushing less air through?

With a strong fan motor on the 120mm fan, you'd just be passing air through the 80mm hole at a much faster rate. Say, some 120mm fan pushes out air at 30mph, then if you hook a duct up to it, it'll probably pass it through at 40-40mph at the 80mm mark.

Re: 80mm to 120mm fan adapter

dont forget about pressure here guys: certain fans are built for high pressure applications like blowing air thru smaller holes (variance on the fan blade shape)

anyways, ive noticed they carry them at my local radioshack

you might be able just to walk down there and pick one up.
