    Good free virus scanner?

Could anyone recommend a good free virus scanner, you know to make sure those bittorrents are not coated to the teeth in malware.

    Thanks!

Allot of folks like the http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner. You can't remove anything though, if you do have infections. You canalways grab a trial of something. The TM HouseCall is another as well: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/. Bitdefender is a good one: http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html. I'd use that one personally.

    Re: Good free virus scanner?

AVG and Avast are both fantastic.  Avast does have a couple of quirks though. From my experience it uses up more system resources than AVG, and it tends to generate a good deal of false positives.  Until one of the more recent updates, it would yell whenever it scanned a system restore file.

    Re: Good free virus scanner?

I've been running avast for a few years and have never had a problem when scanning system restores.

I hear Avira has a better detection rate than avast or avg.

    Re: Good free virus scanner?

I've been running Avast for the past year and its ran great for me. It does take up more resources, but you can disable the add-ons that your not using. I.e. p2p scanner, or network scanner, something like that.

    Re: Good free virus scanner?

I've heard good things about Avast!, but I've long been a user of AVG. AVG works very well for what it does, I wouldn't have too many bad things to say about it, even if it wasn't free.

The question is not who will let me, it is who will stop me.

    Re: Good free virus scanner?

I've always been happy with AVG.  Version 8.0 has been rock solid ever since I downloaded it.  I have run Avast on other computers in the past, and it seems to work pretty good as well.  Any time one of my customers lack anti-virus, I always tell them to go to www.filehippo.com and pick up a copy of AVG there.  They always have consistently fast downloads.

From what I hear, the absolute best anti-virus is Nod32, but that one isn't free.  It however holds the claim of smallest computer footprint, and has the "Leo Laporte" seal of approval.

    Re: Good free virus scanner?

I own an internet cafe where we allow customers to rent systems by the hour, We let them download files, install apps, game, IM, publish, p2p and get all the viruses they want. Avast keeps us squeeky clean and is compatible with our Vista 64bit OS's. I would recommend it to anyone.

    Re: Good free virus scanner?

I can vouch for AVG and Avast home, both are excellent programs that i have used for years. The good thing to note about both of these are they actually have an advantage over alot of the mainstream programs that are popular to buy, is that their virus definitions are updated on a daily basis, unlike norton and mcafee that have weekly updates.
