    OS best path / Choice

I am building a new PC now but did not know what would be the best way to go for an OS on it. I was leaning towards XP Pro 32bit SP2. But not sure if I should take a leap to Vista or XP 64bit version??

     Ideas/ thoughts.

    Thanks

I have had no trouble at all with Vista 64. If you have a PC that can handle the (slightly) increased load, Vista is preferable for a gaming platform just for DX10. The difference in performance between the two is on the order of two or three FPS in most situations. Be sure you get at least 2gigs of good RAM for Vista, and don't think about putting Vista on an older computer.

Ok, Thanks. I will be using this for gamming and for graphic design work. Also of coarse surfing the net. I have read that the 64 bit OS’s are not yet supported by most games so no benefit in getting the 64 bit OS. Is this true? I will have 4 gig of RAM and also a 512meg video card.

    Thanks

Ok for gaming I would personally go with XP pro. It shows better bench marks in DX9 then Vista also you have a 7600GT which is DX9 capable only.

If it was a general use PC for homework to office internet ect... then Vista would be fine.

Media either would be ok as well XP and Vista.

As for the 64bit that is true that some games will not work. How ever if it’s a new game then that I would not really worry about.

Re: OS best path / Choice

64-bit XP has gotten very little love from developers, and drivers are not readily available for most games. In 64-bit Vista, I have only been unable to get one game to work, and that was Theme Hospital, and that was because it wouldn't read my newer sound drivers. If you have and are sticking with a DX9 only video card, I don't see a reason to go to Vista.
