    Re: Home theater system

We are going to need more details than that to make any recommendations.  I am assuming you mean a a/v receiver for the home theater?  There are now a fair number of good a/v receivers with hdmi in and out (most have only 2 in though so if you have more than 2 hdmi devices you will need a hdmi switch as well and luckily they do not run too much).

No idea for advice about wireless speakers as for the most part they do not have anywhere near the same quality as wired speakers.  Someone here may have used some good ones to point out.

    Agree with sjr.

In my many years of being in the A/V hobby there are four factors which dictate the ultimate system you end up with.  In order of most influence....WAF (wife acceptance factor), budget, room, and performance.  With the information posted by the OP, there isn't enough to go on.

A comment on wireless speakers......don't.  Unless you absolutely cannot have wired speakers, I haven't seen any wireless speakers approach the performance of even mediocre wired speakers.  Plus the whole wireless speaker name is misleading.  You still have to run a power cord to power the RF electronics and amp of the wireless speaker.  So you have to find a wall outlet to get power to the speakers.  If you're going to do that, you might as well just run the necessary speaker cables.  Remember, pulling power cords behind the wall is against building codes.

    Re: Home theater system

That's a tall order for $400.  The only thing which comes to mind is a HTIB (home theater in a box) system to get 5.1.  I browsed through some of the offerings and they do have HDMI but it seems only HDMI out.  I haven't found any which has a HDMI in.  I think you're looking at scaling down your expectations or scaling down the system and building it over time as money allows.

    Re: Home theater system

$400 will only get you A/V receivers that can only do HDMI passthrough.  If you want to hear the real HD system, i.e., HD video and audio, opt for ones that can decode Dolby TrueHD, DTS-MA, etc...
