How do you shop at Newegg? Let us know!

    Hi guys,

Hope everyone is looking forward to a great holiday!

Right now, we would love to get some additional feedback regarding the Newegg website. We've been keeping a close eye on your thoughts in this thread: http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/127931.aspx

and would like to build off all those great ideas. This is your chance to tell us what works for you and what you'd like to see implemented. Basically, we want to know your habits to determine the best features of the site (and how to emphasize and improve on them).

For example, do you go straight to the Daily Deals? Should there be a way to bookmark certain categories? Feel free to share your personal preferences and quirks. Tell us what you like about the site when shopping on Newegg and - more importantly - what can be added to make it even better.

Thank you for your help, and have a safe weekend =)  Guitar

Re: How do you shop at Newegg? Let us know!

Well let's see... I'd have to say that I'm fairly happy with the current design of the Newegg.com site. I'm able to click through the menus quickly, and easily to find what I'm looking for, and order. The recent changes are especially nice and allow for more customization, so I only see what I want to see (which is everything, lol).

I would have to say that I rarely use the deals section, in fact I seemingly hardly ever use anything out of the daily deals email either, nor do I ever use the front page. I'm not an impulse buyer, I already know what I need before I click on my Newegg.com tab (on most occasions). So for me it's just a matter of finding the item, or item type and selecting the exact one I need.

On a visual standpoint I do wish there was a "darker" version of both the Newegg.com and EggXpert.com sites. The reasoning is that I'm photosensitive (sensitive to light), so I find myself squinting when I'm on both sites (which is a lot).

Oh and one thing, it would be really nice to have a "my wishlist" at the top of the screen next to the "my account" button. I use the wishlist to build and keep different customer orders separate, however having to either scroll all the way down to dig it out of the bottom links, or go to it the back way through "my account"... is a bit of pain in the rear. However that's about the only pain I've discovered (besides having to squint all the time.) =P

Wow.  Some awesome feedback.  I'll definitely see if in the near future there's anything we can do to make some of your suggestions, reality.  I hear you on the "darker" version comment.  I think my eyes prefer the darker pages also.  The My Wishlist suggestion is also a great one.  Thanks again for the awesome feedback SovetCryptix, as usual VERY helpful info!

Re: How do you shop at Newegg? Let us know!

I will tell you guys this, when compared to others like mwave and frys, you guys simply just win.  Your site is very easy to navigate through and is always up to date, where as the others it just takes me alot longer to find what im interested in and subsequently i dont like buying anything from them as it take another 30 min to find what im looking for.  The website is nice and i do like sovet's idea of a wishlist tab next to the my account tab, that would be great.

I personally do like the daily deals section, and I check it out all the time waiting for that day when what i need happens to be on special.  Unfortuntely not too often but it doesnt hurt to look, does it?

One thing i think is very necessary is to get the watercooling items out from their current location under heatsinks and fans, thats no bueno.

Other than those the website is great, just the way i would expect a great retailor like yourselves to be presented.

Re: How do you shop at Newegg? Let us know!

I have the page below bookmarked as my entry point into the site because I do not like the main page at all:

    http://www.newegg.com/Store/Computer.aspx?name=Computer-Hardware

I only buy products that have a standard NewEgg warranty(30 days return/full one year replacement directly from NewEgg).

I liked the site's layout best two or three revisions ago. IMO, the site has continually went downhill in usability in the last couple of years.

    My 2 Cents.

Re: How do you shop at Newegg? Let us know!

I liked the deals at the front.  Kinda gave me an idea on what to spend my $$ on next.  Do you have a page that i can go to for all the deals in all catigories.  Besides the newsletter subscription?

Other than that, i see no problem between the old and the new.  To tell you the truth, i logged in one day and thought "They changed the home page.  But everything else looks the same."  (hope thats not an insult to you guys)

Re: How do you shop at Newegg? Let us know!

I've always wanted to have a "passive cooling" parts section for motherboards and graphics cards.. That would be motherboards without chipset fans (heatsinks & heatpipes only such as the Asus M2N-E) and also the graphics cards that don't have fans on them (big heatsinks and heatpipes instead) such as the Asus 7600GS

I'm suggesting that you add something to the "Power Search" so that it makes it easy to find things with and without fans..  Passive cooling is VERY important and NewEgg likes to group passive and active cooling items altogether as if they're the same which I find kinda frustrating because I have to browse throught them all.. Those wanting a silent PC or one that doesn't have an early failure due to a fan going bad is going to want Passive Cooled parts..  I'm a big fan (no pun intended) of fanless passive cooled parts! And it's kinda hard to find them without browsing the pictures of all the items..

Edit: Just for clarification, the last 2 PCs I built were practically totally silent using very quiet fans, extensive use of fan controllers, and parts that are passive cooled (big heatsinks, no fans). Finding the silent fans (fans that don't lie about their noise rating) and passive cooled parts at NewEgg is kinda like finding a needle in a haystack.. 99% of the time, I have to consult other sites and then come back and hope that NewEgg carries that item..

Re: How do you shop at Newegg? Let us know!

I also skip the deals page unless I am "window shopping". I usually know what I want even though I may not have chosen a specific brand and model as yet. I buy on performance and value not price. In other words I would not buy a cheaper componnent and give up performance but I would not pay a bunch more for the same componnent just because I like the store. Having said that I would not switch vendors just to save a small amount of money. If I am building a rig I generally do a few price comparisons just to see the range but I then buy all or most from one vendor. For the last few years that has been New Egg. I have paid more from N E on some (few) componnents but overall I have broken even on price and I have received the part on time with no suprise outages or poor packaging causing damage.

I also place a value on service, getting the part quickly, being able to easily track shipping, getting the part well packaged with no damage, The reviews are also valuable to me, I know what a specific CPU or GPU Etc will do but I may not know some of the pros and cons of a new fan controller or cooler or case so feedback from users in those casses is very valuable.

Re: How do you shop at Newegg? Let us know!

I shop by the biggest deal and most savings, get it while its cheap because its sure to go back up again.  I browse competitive sites like ZipZoomFly.com, which I feel is a very good site because they offer Free Shipping on nearly every item they sell, which is quite impressive.  So I compare and find the best buy and almost every time I look to newegg.  I think like an above poster, there should be different color schemes, I love the classic look, but I'd love to see a darker look.  If newegg offered Free Shipping on every product I certainly would have bought a few more things.  Matter of fact I check a couple of the same items on a daily basis and waiting to put a new order in any day now, just making sure prices don't drop on a specific item after I order mine, so I'll wait and see the next Newegg Deal Letters this week and see the sales.  By the way Newegg Sale letters are awesome, for some reason I don't get emails about them anymore but I check the forums regularly.

I like the current home page very much.. It's nice to have a complete concise list of all product categories that NewEgg sells without having to rummage through the menus..  Those who don't like it can keep on using their bookmarks Confused

Re: How do you shop at Newegg? Let us know!

I like the web page setup the way it is.  When I go to newegg, i know the item I'm looking for an directly click on the category at the top and start narrowing it down by model/price/etc.  Besides price and selection, the most important search criteria on the site is ratings.  This is one of the best features to newegg.  I always read what other customers are saying about products.  I try to leave ratings about the products I purchase but sometimes forget.  A good idea would be to send some type of "follow up" email with direct links to the products a person has purchased so they can rate them quickly and easily.   Just like when you purchase something that is up for a buyers choice type award.  I think there would be a lot more ratings this way.

Re: How do you shop at Newegg? Let us know!

As I've said with this thread, there's a lot of places in newegg where you can't use the Advanced search feature because the drop down boxes have redundant data in them. For example, I wanted an AM2 heat sink. So, do I select AM2 / LGA 775, AM2 / LGA 775 / 939, or one of the other 6 with AM2 in it?

Another example, I was looking for a good 3.5" Hard drive enclosure. I wanted one that had Ethernet. So, seeing that I could not select both Ethernet and Ethernet and USB2.0, I had to switch to power search. Even in power search, this kind of thing is really annoying. Also, network cord lengths being selectable in ranges is kinda weird. Cables are only sold by 3, 6, 7, 9, 10, 15, 20, 25, 50, 75, 100, and then some dumb rarities like 1ft and 1000ft. I really don't think 1000ft cables should be in my search for 50ft cables. Yeah, I bought a 50ft Cat6E cable a few days ago, lol. VERY GOOD PRICE, $7~.

Anyways, all that aside, I tried shopping at TigerDirect for some of the same things, but their search functionality is severely limited beyond manually typing specs in. And it often repeats itself. When I shop for parts, I don't want to shop anywhere else!

Sovet is correct, Newegg still provides daily deals.  I know our main page doesn't show it, but all you would have to do is click "browse" and it will take you to our Newegg Daily deals.

This information is great.  Please let us know how we can make this easier for everybody else.  Keep them coming Guys/Gals!

    Thanks!

Re: How do you shop at Newegg? Let us know!

For power supplies, you should add to the filter to specify between modular cable/wrapped cables/unwrapped cables.

When I am looking to buy a PSU I find myself having to look at all the pictures to find out what the cables are like.

I don't know how many cases out there have PSU's on bottom, but if there are enough for a filter that would be great to.  I got the Antec Nine Hundred and I see no reason to ever buy another case without PSU on bottom again.  (I might be getting Antec Nine Hundred's the rest of my life)

I also agree with the Wishlist Button.  I need easier access to my wishlists, i go to invoices a lot also....anyone else spend a lot of time there?

In regards to Daily Deals, I don't use them that much.  I think it would be better if the actual deal was highlighted maybe?  It takes me a few seconds longer to figure out what the actual deal is than I would like.

I like the way you have it set up now,Daily deals I like to look at just in case there is something I need.I do like the idea about putting "wish list" up by "my account". Would be easier to get to.I save all "my soon to be" purchases in my wish list,so to access it easily would be great.

Sometimes deals catch my eye, but as a performance customer, I do MOST of my shopping using advanced/guided search, then I drill down to the pricepoint I am interested in and shop by feature, or just shop by feature and accept / reject based on price.

Re: How do you shop at Newegg? Let us know!

I will generally look at the Daily Deals on Mondays (they do not really seem to update daily so I go with the once a week approach).  I am not sure if I have ever actually gotten an item listed in the Daily Deals though I have used it as a starting point if there is something that is listed that I am interested in.  I will usually end up looking at something else of the same category.

I used to like the when the main start page was on the Daily deals to start with and the categories were listed down the left side, though you can still get to that view by clicking one of the category tabs on the home page, like Browse, Computer Hardware, etc.  I then generally have some sort of an idea of what I want to look at and find it under the category I think it will be listed under, which is right most of the time, though there are some parts I look for that I have to guess a bit but have always ended up finding something.

About half the time I am looking for something in specific, and the other half I am just looking around to see what is out there.

I agree with the wis list tab first of all, i have to cross refrence my m/b and case choices quite a bit since i seem to have no short term memory. also the package deals if it would be easier to see what they actually are would be nice. I'm all about saving money which any of you that have read my other posts know i'm on a very tight budget but also like decent equipment. Great site all around NewEgg, keep up the good work
