Dumpster Diving for PC Parts
A few weeks ago I got lucky when I stopped behind a building's dumpster that went out of business and I found three old [really old] laptops 2 pentiums 1 mac, a less that 1Gig HD [took the magnets] and a nice 17" HP CRT monitor with built in mic. Anyone ever find anything in the trash? Computer stuff or otherwise? I'll post a pic of the monitor I found

Re: Dumpster Diving for PC Parts
Where I live most companies will either trash the parts or have them recycled, plus I don't think the company you took from would approve although they are throwing it away. But hey more power to you if you can use those parts and they work.

Re: Dumpster Diving for PC Parts
I myself found this 19" IBM crt dumpster diving.. it seemed to be thrown out by goodwill cause it did not include a power cable for them to test it with. Ahh well it has worked fine for 2 and a half years untill i got myself an LCD. I still keep it for a backup too.

Re: Dumpster Diving for PC Parts
Dumpster diving at a College is great... most of the time. Especially during move outs. I've found monitors, vacuum cleaners, lamps, keyboards, motherboards, etc. Most are in perfect condition! Talk about a throw-away-culture.

Re: Dumpster Diving for PC Parts
Once you leave something at the curb for trash pick-up, you have surrendered all property rights to it. This has been challenged in court and upheld. The outcome is that the police are free to go through someones trash to find evidence, without a search warrant. Or, you are able to legally take something that someone has thrown out.

Re: Dumpster Diving for PC Parts
Damn the only thing I find in trash is more trash. Haha, the only computer things I manage to find are extremely broken ones. Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough. =P.

Re: Dumpster Diving for PC Parts
Dumpster is 100% legal as long as the site is not posted, if you are caught dumpster diving and are asked to leave, then you should immediately pack-up go on your way... I always hear about people finding incredible things while diving, but I personally have only ever found a bunch of fairly new cellphones (without batteries or SIN cards) and a crap load of out of date magazines (which I took anyways)... It also doesn't help that I live in a rural area where the nearest large "mall like" area is 25ish miles away...

Re: Dumpster Diving for PC Parts
A couple of years ago my in-laws were working maintenance at an upper class school district. They gave me a call, telling me that the school was upgrading all of their two year old computers. They had gotten permission for me to take what i wanted. I picked up my teenage daughter (who attends school in this district through "school of choice") and we headed over to the junior high where they were working. My father-in-law pointed me to a 30 yard dumpster and said "take what you want." I started handing down 19 inch monitors to my daughter who reluctantly ("what if my friends see me, i will die!") was loading them in our van. When i found a box with three unopened playstations and handed them down to her, she changed her tune! When i tried to hand her another tower, she wasn't there! I called for her and she replied from the other end of the dumpster as she climbed in with me! We spent the next few months cleaning windows xp installs and furnishing every child in our poor neighborhood with a free computer! We have been invited to every birthday, graduation and wedding party since!

Re: Dumpster Diving for PC Parts
The city that I live in (Farmington, MN) has a "trash day" where everybody puts all of their old/broken/unwanted stuff at the end of their driveways and a few trucks go around and haul all of the stuff to recycling plants for free. I got a 29" CRT monitor from that once. That thing must've weighed 150+ pounds! I disassembled it, and the front glass was over an inch thick! It was interesting. There's also an abundance of old computer c**p (Pentiums, Pentium II's, and once a perfectly functioning P4 computer), lawnmowers, tables, couches, and weed whackers. It's pretty interesting what people just throw out.

Re: Dumpster Diving for PC Parts
One day I took my wife to work and her company shares a building with two other companies. Well, one of them throw out three computers, two large CRT monitors and a printer. I thought I had died and gone to heaven...until I got there. I opened the shell and they gutted the major parts. HD, CPU, Ram. It was all gone. I did get a couple of good fans and pci slot covers out of it though. Talk about being disappointed, and I bet I embarrassed my wife to all hell.
