Eggcellent idea!  I will assume NE's idea here is to control the review environment a little better, and I agree with them.  I want the reviews to have the most integrity possible...

yeah...Newegg will mark the review with 'This user purchased this item from Newegg.com'

for us to identify the reviewer and avoid some spoof / shills ... well done Newegg Yes

THAT IS IT!!!! NewEgg needs to make it that ONLY people who have PURCHASED the item FROM NewEgg can submit a review... PERIOD.Super Angry

    Re: newegg reveiws

The time frame you can leave reviews from your purchase would need to be increased then.  I am not sure exactly how long it stays on your order history as an option but several times I left reviews in the past it was no long listed on my item to leave a review.  On several items I will eventually leave a review but I like to actually have some extended use before I say something is bad or is the best ever.

    Re: newegg reveiws

Well then let us hope that they read/peruse/research these posts then.   And, you couldn't be more correct, NE does need to "extend" the time as to when you can leave a review of a product.   I think we all want the same thing:  Reviews, from folks that care, that have actually used the product, that will be honest good or bad, that purchased the product from NE.

Also mabye have a specific area in the review area that specifically pertains to ones feelings about NE in general and their shipping abilities.  I don't like weeding through reviews telling me how wonderful NE is at shipping, or their return policies.  I care specifically about the product, period.   I don't purchase products wondering how easy it will be to return/exchange it, nor do I care how fast something gets to me, as I, unlike 97% of the world have something called patients.  I would rather shipping be a total charge of $4 no matter what you buy and get to my house in a week, then pay $21 to have it get here in 3 days.

I do hope that NE does peruse these posts, we wouldn't be here if we didn't like The Egg. Yes We want it to be the best purchacing and communicating computing community in the world.

I also have a question:  Can you become a part of eggxpert if you have not purchased anyting from NE?   I would like this to be a bit of an exclusive community.  That is not to sound snotty, Stick out tongueit is said in an effort to preserve the quality so far established in this (eggxpert)  forum.

    Re: newegg reveiws

The answer to that is YES otherwise how would you get more customers if you did not have somewhere to advise the less knowledgable ones on what was compatable, what is the better product for what they want to do with it, what new products arecoming out and what problems they can expect to run into this helps the people which in turn helps newegg. Also the more knowledgable people it brings to the egg the more it can help people like me and you.Yes

    Re: newegg reveiws

Alright, you got me.  You're right.

With that, how hard do you think it would be for NewEgg to:

    1) only allow people that have purchased the product from NewEgg be able to review it.

    2) put the perameters out to being able to review an item after (up to) 90 days of use.

What do you think HOG? Big Smile

I have left reviews on an item more than a year after I purchased it.  Over 2 years on at least 2 items.

Merwin that is an excellant idea but to take it a step further allow those that do own it and do write a review to come back in say 3-6 months and upgrade that review that way we all can benafit byfinding out if that product can cut the mustard and last.Woohoo

    Re: newegg reveiws

HOG that is a freakin schweet idea!  Let's have new egg drop an email to people 6 months after they have purchased the product (a form letter of course) and call it a "Re-Review".  It would be nice to know if a product that did so well in reviews is worth anything 3-4-5 months later!

    Your idea is great HOG!

Uh, yeah, that was the point of my post.  The op was saying that people shouldn't be able to do that and I was pointing out that the leave a review option does not stay on your account for items you have purchased for very long.

    Re: newegg reveiws

I think I am with you here SJR... So you say the "op" (is that the operations manager?) says that people shoudn't be able to do that (review items 6 months later) and that the option is NOT ours for the decision.  Meaning that we the purchaser of the product does not have the option to wait a few months before reviewing a product.    IF that is the case, I do hope they change that policy...  I would like to be able to review products months after purchase, and multiple times at that  (i.e. One week after purchase, and 6 months after purchase)

I agree with the majority of the comments here, the review help people like myself that are new to pc building to do a better job.  Integrity of those reviews are instrumental in determining quality vs non- quality items.

    Re: newegg reveiws

    Hi everyone,

new Xpert member here and a new newegg customer as well.

I just want to add my two cents and say that I think that anyone should be able to post a review on Newegg.  Now hear me out...I am building my first PC and all the reviews on Newegg have been incredibly important in helping me pick out a product.  Not only that, but I want to be able to do all my review reading and purchasing on newegg alone just to make everything simpler for me.

Now, I think that if someone has spent the money to buy, say, a high end video card, they should be able to share their experience with the rest of the world so we all get to benefit from their knowledge.  So what if they purchased it at a different site?  Their input is still valid AND helpful to the newegg shopper.

I think it is the right thing to label which shoppers are people who purchased from newegg, that helps us filter through the reviews a little better.

I think it is WRONG to prohibit non-newegg shoppers from posting their reviews.  They are just contributing to making Newegg the best computer resource on the internet...Yes, there are plenty of bad or useless reviews, but there have been MANY where the person admits not buying from Newegg but goes on to provide a very detailed account of their experience with the product.  I extend my thanks to Newegg customers and non-Newegg customers alike for posting such helpful reviews.

Hey solarnoise, welcome to the forum Applause

well... I dont think newegg blocked the reviews from non-newegg-purchasers...newegg was just trying to sort those egg purchasers out of others...

I have to agree that some end users are kind enough to post a review for an item he purchased elsewhere than the egg and share his personal experience with all egg browsers...But, every coin has 2 sides...there used to be some fake end users who post misleading info on the egg that might cause trouble to potential buyers, newegg and original manuafacturers...so I guess those reviews with 'This user purchased this item from Newegg.com' would be sort of end user cert... just my 0.02

    Re: newegg reveiws

While I buy most of my stuff from Newegg, I have in the past purchased software and the like elsewhere.  I recently had some major issues occur with some software I had purchased at a store locally.  I did post a review here with what happen so that if anyone else encountered the issue, they would know that the company  that made the software took 10 days before they responded to the trouble ticket I had submitted with the company.  Due to my needing working software sooner than that, I had to switch to a different product but when the manufacturer of the software did finally respond, they gave an alternate install method that they said would work.

I have also seen the reviews by people bashing programs and while I don't like seeing them, I would rather see them instead of missing a review from someone that bought elsewhere who posted info that helped me out.

    Re: newegg reveiws

We could really come up with a compromise for this type of thing to work as desired:

Newegg could check the box by DEFAULT to only see Newegg purchasers so we have validated buyers first and if we want to read the OTHER reviews, we just uncheck the box. That would enable us to see other comments.

I also think perhaps a filter to block people from posting just irrevocably stupid remarks like "..." or "DOA" - DOA is a song, Dead on Arrival and really should not accepted to make useless posts. So what, one product was dead when you received it; maybe it was your fault it was dead, generally submerging a power supply in your bath tub isn't good practice while powering it on...

Filtering too much if at all would/could be really bad as well; maybe asking the user if they had bought it or not and maybe even from where (Newegg's marketing/advertising team would probably also like to know this so they could have a field day out of out-smarting the other place).

So many Red buttons, so little time ;-).

    Re: newegg reveiws

I have a few thoughts. First of all, if there were four reviews and three of them said the item was DOA. I would be very interested in that information before I purchased the item.

On-line reviews are like everything else on-line. You have to take statements with a grain of salt, and read between the lines. If you are upset because you feel someone doesn't know what they are talking about then you probably know that their review is worthless to you.

I feel the reviews are very helpful in  choosing products. Most times you can tell if a reviewer has a working knowledge of the product and can give their review proper weight in making your decision. Other times it's obvious that they don't and you know to disregard their review.  For example if you read a review that states something like, "brand X didn't work for me or my friend so don't buy it" or "this product is great because I like this brand" you know that the reviews are subjective to prejudice and are essentially worthless. On the other hand if the review say something like, "I have used this hardware on five machines and, although it was a little tricky installing the driver on a Win2K machine it, worked very well on all", you know that it sounds like  it was a good choice for that person. If you go on to read several reviews with the same basic theme it's a pretty good bet that it will perform along the lines stated.

I also feel it would be less than helpful to limit reviews or spend resources setting up complex filters. Just because someone buys a product from the Egg doesn't mean they understand it better than someone that bought it elsewhere. Consider that some people may use products at work, home, or school and may not be able to buy said products from NewEgg. Just because they didn't, doesn't make their experiences any less helpful for anyone making a decision about that product.
