    YES PCIe 1.0-1.1-1.1a-2.0-2.1-3.0 ARE Compatible!!

YES PCIe 2.0  and 1.1 (16x) are compatible!

2.0 cards will work in 1.1 main boards and visa versa.  (most of the time)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express#PCI_Express_2.0

Also the 2.1 cards are compatible with both older versions as well.

Also the 3.0 cards are compatible with both older versions as well.

    Any questions?

    Edit: Post updated for 3.0

FYI there are some people who bought the first batch of 8800GT 512's (PCI-E 2.0 card)  that could not get the card to work in their 1.1 boards.  The fix was a new BIOS flash and/or a video card firmware update.  So while technically they are compatible, your real-world results may vary.

    Performance will be the same.

Even the best cards on the market can still not use the full bandwidth of 16x.

Re: YES PCIe 2.0(32x) and 1.1(16x) ARE Compatible!

Very few cards fully utilize a PCI-Express 16x slot...Dual GPU/PCBs such as NVIDIA's 7950GX2, ATi's Radeon HD3870GX2, and NVIDIA upcoming 9800GX2 take up more bandwidth then even a 8800ULTRA (Only a little more bandwidth in the 7950GX2's case) in both a single slot and multiple slot configuration...PCI-Express 2.0 can carry a huge amount of bandwidth, so there is definantly no worries with the slot interface being a bottleneck...Unless you're still using AGP 4x/8x slot...And if you're using original PCI...Stick out tongue

Here's a link to some tests done by Tom's Hardware which prove my point:

I thought the 8800GT only had problems with PCI-E version 1.1a or something like that.  It works with 1.0 and 1.1 but not 1.1a, which was what made it so funny.  But yeah, there are BIOS fixes for a bunch of motherboards I think.  I wouldn't know.  But what if people have a super old motherboard from a lame company that no longer updates the BIOS though.  That would be sad.

    Can I try this out.

    2 of these: EVGA 512-P3-N861-AR GeForce 9600GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16.

will fit and work in SLI with

EVGA 123-YW-E175-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 750i FTW ATX Intel Motherboard.

    Will this work??

    Thanks for the help.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS 32x

    It's PCIE 2.0 x16 and PCIE 1.0/1.1 (x16).

PCIE 2.0 lanes (16 lanes) carry UP TO twice as much data, that us why it's "2x faster".

It's possible to make PCIE x32 connectors, but they would need to be TWICE AS LONG as current gen PCIE 1.1 and 2.0 x16 slots.

And what CAGG just stated above is the key reason why PCI-E 2.0 is  backwords compatible with PCI-E 16x, they use the same amount of lanes, the only major difference (Greatly simplified, of course, and not the only difference, per-say) is the bandwidth provided by the increase of the lane's speeds...Wink

Ok I'm building a new computer and I picked this motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138110. I want to know If an Nvidia 8800GT will work in it because it says PCIe 2.0. The mobo says PCIe x16. Does anyone know if it is 1.0 or 1.1?
