Re: Fighting Viruses in Vista Without Antivirus Pr
She knows that she is the Virus/Spyware/Maleware QUEEN!!!!!!!!!! She has a limited Account on mine............back when I was on rotten old XP Pro I bought her a HP lap top because I was tired of cleaning my machine just to use it on a weekly basis, she gets backed up to a network drive and restored once a month on average. I still have yet to find a AV app that can protect her on the net. She absolutely astounds me in her virus finding skills.

Re: Fighting Viruses in Vista Without Antivirus Pr
Wow how is that even possible?! Maybe she searches for viruses? I can't think of any commonly used websites with viruses (Yahoo, Hotmail, etc).

This is even better.
http://www.faronics.com/html/deepfreeze.asp
And you get 100% assurance your OS isn't going to be affected by virus/malware without having to go through the annoying confirmation prompts which that article seems to leverage.

Re: Fighting Viruses in Vista Without Antivirus Progra
I dont want to be the pessimistic one, but give it some time, there's just too many degenerates out there with nothing to do with their time but create exploits against MS. It didnt take them that long to come up with a crack for validating, so I would have to believe the odds of getting around UAC are rather good.
Just food for thought, Penewah!

GmsCool, you should just try to block all those sites from being ever accessed haha =P. Of course, eventually someone will find some loophole to get around it.

Re: Fighting Viruses in Vista Without Antivirus Pr
Again, looks like I'm playing Devil's advocate, from the latest Virus Bulletin: Vista fails to reassure web users
50% of users don't believe Vista has made the Internet any
safer.
According to a recent poll, 50% of visitors to the VB
website do not believe that Windows Vista has made the Internet any
safer.
On its release, Microsoft's most recent operating system
was hailed by chairman Bill Gates as being 'dramatically more secure' than other
operating systems, but a year after its initial roll-out only 25% of visitors to
www.virusbtn.com say they think it has made a positive impact on web security.
One reader summed up: 'Windows Vista does an OK job of protecting itself
and its users, but virus writers will find a way around it and in the end
security all comes down to the human factor.'
VB's second comparative review of anti-malware products
for Vista will be conducted in spring 2008.

I have never seen how a release of an OS made the internet any safer. I remember when XP came out they said it would be safer... Ha!...

So, by deduction, that means that 50% of users believe that Vista DOES make the Internet safer. I guess we know what side of the fence the author is on. Of course, the real question is safer from what? Stalkers? an ex boy/girlfriend?
I for one don't think that Vista makes google any safer. Then again, google already does a pretty good job keeping my browsing history safe...

Re: Fighting Viruses in Vista Without Antivirus Pr
I agree with Penewab2007, it wont be long before the scum find a way around the UAC as well as the new windows firewall, and I am also curious as to how advanced the new and improved windows firewall is. Does it allow specific port settings? gateway settings? port stealthing? Yall can do what you want but I already have my antivirus & firewall picked out for once I start using Vista in January and I will of course be behind a router 24/7.

That's exactly what I would assume too, however, without knowing what the actual question(s) were, it's hard to tell. This is the problem with any survey. You never really know what they asked or how that was translated into some stupid percentage.
As a side, My wife used to work for a magazine and has interesting stories about a program they ran where you told it the outcome you wanted and it would sift through various survey data to get it. For example, one month they might say that Portland, OR is the best place on the planet to live (and have supporting survey data. The next month they might say Little Rock, AR is the best place to live, and still be able to show supporting survey data. It's all a matter of what was asked, how it was asked, and who you asked.
With regards to OS security, they could look at the number of actual intrusions on a OS basis, divided by the number of installations tested. Which could be seen as telling which OS was more secure; or it might be interpreted as which OS is easier to secure; or it might simply be a metric against the more savy users versus ones who have no clue what they are doing; or it could simply say which OS was secure out of the box....
In the end it's all in the presentation, and therefore meaningless.
Personally, I know Vista is secure as I've been running it a year without a anti virus product or 3rd party firewall product, and everything is just fine. I also know that Windows 2003 and XP were also secure, as I ran those for years without A/V (or 3rd party firewalls) and also without problems. Then again, I'm a highly knowledgable guy who knows how to set things up without needing that c**p.

Baer:50% ( perhaps 75%) of computer users don't know anything about using a computer and theirefore their opinion is worthless.
These were visitors to Virus Bulletin, an advanced site dedicated to computer security. While I would agree 50-75% of the general population are clueless about security, hardware, etc. People at the Virus Bulletin are above the norm, security geeks and people from the industry, who share research and tets results. The Single user license for one year at Virus Bulletin is $175. and corporate subscriptions are ridiculous. I don't think the sampling group at the Bulletin is your usual pessimistic Tom, Mick, and Harriet running rampant with a broadband connection.
Who knows, maybe we're just a bunch of Zipperheads as well. I know I am, 50% of the time

Re: Fighting Viruses in Vista Without Antivirus Pr
Vistas UAC is the equivalent of airport screening. Inconvenient, slow, does nothing for the guy on the tarmac who is loading bombs into your baggage then onto the plane but it looks like something is being done about security by shoving it in the publics face.

Thats funny. A fair comparison, but funny. Yeah there's a reason MS isnt making billions in the security area. When your the bank, leave it to the pros to build the better safe. (yours is more creative! LOL) Penewah!
