What makes a noob, a noob?

There a many aspects that can label someone a noob. many people jump at ignorance or a gap in someones knowledge and label them a noob.

 So is a noob simply someone who does not know about a certain subject.. computers in general? maybe they know thier GFX cards, but know squat about Hard drives... they are smart enough to go for the "sweet spot" Radeon 3850, but go out and buy the largest Hard drive possible when they don't need it or get a Raptor 15,000RPMS, when the CHEAP SATA 500GB is cheaper and "Shock" faster?

 

is he a noob? he knew his stuff about video cards, but nothing about HDD's and thus screwed himself over.

 

Another situation... someone knows nothing about computers, but is a smart shopper, they don't just compare prices ie "Hmm I want the new CPU-X oooh look a CPU-X for $99." and he get's a very low end, no heat sink, OEM CPU-X. He was smart enough to price shop, but did not realize that even though he found a cpu for $99 it may not have been the best cpu at $99 or that there was CPU-X version 2 for $99 that might be better. or that if he had spent $120 he could have gotten a 300% performance increase from CPU - Y

 
Final Situation... Similiar to the above one, but a more common type we are familiar with. Someone wants to buy the best and the fastest Graphics card and money is no object...(In my opinion money is always an object.) so he goes and researches and compares all the video cards, and find that the GFX-man 1234 OC GT with GDDR8 is the BEST of the BEST and he should get 2 and CrosSLI them. so he goes and spends $800 each and sets up his rig.. when we all know he could have gotten the RAD-man 9876 with GDDR5 for $300 and it only performs about 10% slower then the dual $800 cards. AND since it was made with the new .56nm processor is overclockable via a slider bar to be 20% faster then his CrosSLI setup..

 

OK so I super exacherated on that last one, but you of course get what i mean...

 
Here are 3 different kinds of noobs...

The 1/2 educated one

The smart shopper

and the Big spender

 

are they all noobs on equal levels? is there a ranking system does one get more respect?
 

A noob or newbee or what ever you want to call them is someone new to the group or to the eggxpert forum it has nothing to do with ignorance, knowledge or experience.

I think being a newb,noob,newbee, can relate to anything you want to relate it too. In gaming I usually hear it being used when someone gets totally owned by a more advanced player, heck I've been called a noob on Halo when I'm on one of my bad days. We go mountain bike riding in some dirt trails and considered noobs to the area just because we have never been there. And like HOG said, i don't think it has to with ignorance, knowledge but i think i would definitely relate it to experience, if you have a lot of experience then your not a noob. =)

noob is a horrible term to apply to people, but sometimes needed to best summarize someones skill level in a certain area.

The RAD-man 9876 is a hypothetical extreme GPU that does not exist, to exagerate my point.but I had the Nvidia Geforce 8800 GT OC in mind when I was writing this. this real life card is amazingly powerful for it's value. but it only equeals and sometimes beats the 8800 GTX and the 8800 Ultra, but not in every case. and it has never been measrued against thos card in SLI Config.

a noob is one unwilling to learn...newb and newbie are those uneducated but have a wiliingness. im a spelling noob i just dont care.

A "n00b" is anyone who persists in their opinion or in asking a question in a different manner just because they "want to be sure" or possibly might be doubting the information they do not have and are getting from many sources.

<CAGG> SATA is a slot standard, and IDE (Parallel ATA or ultra ATA) are a pin standard, not physically compatible. You can use converters, but the drives still run at IDE speeds.

<CAGG>  These are different physical standards. SATA and IDE are not compatible, even with converters your speed is bottlenecked...

It's more of a behavior, than being new. 

noob- someone that asks a question without making any attempt to find the answer on their own.
