what temperature range should my QX9650 remain in?

I just got a Qx9650 and for some reason it isnt cooling down. I used  arctic silver and a stock cooler with all voltages and clockspeeds at stock and it was idling at 65C!!! Now I took it out of the case and am using a thermaltake Typhoon and am getting aroung 40-45C idle . is this too hot because I read that these chips are suppose to run cool and this is hotter then my old AMD X2 which would idle around 33-35C.

please help me out I am desperate and dont want to fry this CPU, its costing me a fortune.

Hmm, for a 45nm with a big cooler that does sound a bit warm, are you applying the thermal grease correctly? theres how-to videos on youtube

Where are you getting these temperature readings from? The BIOS?

It may also be the stepping of the cpu, like the B3 stepping of the Q6600 runs warmer compared to the G0 stepping Q6600

what stepping is your QX9650? You can find out from Cpu-z
